Vehicle: 2022 Hyundai Elantra SEL

I'm having some annoying issues with the infotainment system in my 2022 Hyundai Elantra SEL. The screen frequently freezes up, becoming completely unresponsive for several minutes before it either reboots itself or I have to manually restart the car.

On top of that, Apple CarPlay is very unreliable. It constantly disconnects randomly while driving, or sometimes it won't connect at all when I plug in my iPhone. I've tried different USB cables (including the original Apple one) and restarting my phone multiple times, but the problem persists.

Is this a known software bug with the Elantra's infotainment system, or could it be a hardware issue with the head unit or USB port? Any suggestions before I head to the dealership?

Infotainment system glitches and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity problems are common complaints, and your 2022 Hyundai Elantra SEL could be experiencing a few different things:

  1. Software Update: The most common fix for freezing screens and connectivity issues is a software update for the infotainment system. Hyundai frequently releases updates to improve stability and compatibility. Check the Hyundai owner's portal or ask your dealership if there's a newer version available for your specific head unit.
  2. System Reset: Many infotainment systems have a small reset button (sometimes requiring a paperclip to press) or a menu option to perform a factory reset. This can clear temporary glitches. Refer to your owner's manual for instructions.
  3. USB Port and Cable Integrity: While you've tried different cables, ensure the USB port itself is clean and free of debris. A slightly damaged or loose internal connection in the port can cause intermittent connectivity. Also, use high-quality, data-transfer-capable USB cables.
  4. Phone Compatibility/Settings: Ensure your iPhone's iOS is updated. Sometimes, specific app settings or background processes on the phone can interfere with CarPlay. Try connecting a different phone to see if the issue persists.
  5. Module Communication: The infotainment system relies on communication with various modules. If there's a fault in the head unit itself or a related communication module, it could cause these symptoms. OBD codes related to communication (e.g., U-codes) might be present, though less common for just infotainment glitches.
  6. When to See a Shop:
    • If a software update and system reset don't resolve the problem.
    • If the freezing is frequent and severe, indicating a potential hardware fault in the head unit.
    • If the USB port appears physically damaged or loose.
    • If the issue persists with multiple phones and high-quality cables. The dealership can perform diagnostics and potentially replace the head unit under warranty if a defect is found.
