Loud Squealing from Front Brakes on my 2018 Elantra

1. Causes:
   • Worn Brake Pads: Most brake pads have a metal wear indicator that makes a high-pitched squeal when the pads are getting thin, signaling they need replacement.

   • Contamination: Dust, dirt, or even brake fluid/grease on the pads or rotors can cause squealing.
   • Rust: Surface rust, especially after rain or sitting for a while, can cause initial squealing that usually goes away after a few stops.
2. What to Check:
   • Visually inspect your brake pads through the wheel spokes. If they look very thin (less than 3-4mm), they definitely need replacing.
   • Check for any scoring or deep grooves on the brake rotors.
3. When to See a Shop:
   • If the squealing is accompanied by a grinding noise, this means the pads are completely worn, and metal is grinding against metal, which can quickly damage your rotors. This requires immediate attention.
   • If the car pulls to one side when braking, or if you feel vibrations through the pedal, it could indicate warped rotors or uneven pad wear.
   • Any change in braking performance, like a soft pedal or increased stopping distance, warrants a professional inspection.
