Vehicle: 2019 Hyundai Kona 1.6T Ultimate

Hi everyone,

I own a 2019 Hyundai Kona 1.6T with the 7-speed DCT, and I've been experiencing some really frustrating transmission issues lately. The car often feels jerky, especially when shifting at low speeds or in stop-and-go traffic. It's most noticeable between 1st and 2nd gear, and sometimes it hesitates before engaging a gear.

It feels like the car is struggling to decide which gear to be in, leading to a very unrefined driving experience. I've heard that DCTs can be a bit quirky, but this feels beyond normal. I'm worried about the longevity of the transmission.

Has anyone else with a Kona 1.6T or another Hyundai with this DCT experienced similar problems? What was the fix? Is this something a software update can resolve, or am I looking at a bigger mechanical issue? Any insights would be great!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Rough shifting and hesitation in your 2019 Hyundai Kona 1.6T with the 7-speed Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT) is a common concern for owners of this type of transmission. While DCTs can have a different feel than traditional automatics, persistent jerking and hesitation are not normal and should be investigated.

  1. Understanding DCT Behavior: DCTs are essentially two manual transmissions working in parallel, automated by a computer. They can sometimes feel a bit more direct or 'clunky' at very low speeds compared to a torque converter automatic. However, excessive harshness or hesitation points to a problem.

  2. Potential Causes & Diagnostics:

    • Software Glitch/Calibration: Often, rough shifting can be improved or resolved with a transmission control module (TCM) software update. Hyundai periodically releases updates to refine shift logic and improve drivability. This is the first and least invasive step.
    • Clutch Pack Wear: The clutches in a DCT are wear items, similar to a manual transmission. Premature wear can lead to slipping, harsh engagement, or hesitation. This is more likely with aggressive driving or excessive stop-and-go traffic.
    • Mechatronic Unit Issues: The mechatronic unit controls the shifting. Malfunctions here can lead to erratic shifting. This is a more complex and expensive repair.
    • Fluid Level/Quality: Incorrect transmission fluid levels or degraded fluid can impact shifting performance, though DCTs are generally sealed units.
    • OBD Codes: While not always present for 'feel' issues, transmission-related codes like P0700 (Transmission Control System Malfunction), P0731 (Gear 1 Incorrect Ratio), or P0729 (Gear 6 Incorrect Ratio) could indicate specific internal problems.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • Immediately: If the car enters 'limp mode,' refuses to shift, or if the check engine light or transmission warning light illuminates.
    • As Soon As Possible: For persistent, noticeable harsh shifts, hesitation, or any feeling that the transmission is 'slipping.'
  4. What to Expect: Start by scheduling an appointment with a Hyundai dealership. Explain the symptoms clearly. Request that they check for any available TCM software updates first. If that doesn't resolve the issue, they will need to perform diagnostics, which may include reading fault codes (even if no warning lights are on), checking fluid levels (if accessible), and potentially performing a clutch adaptation procedure. Your 2019 Kona should still be under the powertrain warranty, so ensure they thoroughly document the issue.
