Vehicle: 2020 Hyundai Kona Ultimate

Hi all,

I'm experiencing some really frustrating transmission issues with my 2020 Hyundai Kona Ultimate, which has the 7-speed DCT. It's got about 45,000 miles on it. Lately, the shifting has become very rough, especially in lower gears (1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd). It often hesitates before engaging, almost like it's slipping, and sometimes there's a noticeable jerk.

It's particularly bad in stop-and-go traffic. I've heard some things about Hyundai's DCTs, but I'm not sure if this is normal behavior or a sign of a bigger problem. Has anyone else with a Kona or similar Hyundai DCT experienced this? What was the fix?

Thanks for any insights!

Rough shifting and hesitation in a Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT) like the one in your 2020 Hyundai Kona Ultimate are common complaints and can indicate several issues, some of which are known for these transmissions.

  1. Initial Checks: Ensure your vehicle is up to date on all transmission fluid changes as per the maintenance schedule. While DCTs are often sealed, some require specific fluid checks or changes.
  2. Look for DTCs: Connect an OBD-II scanner. Common codes related to DCT issues include:
    • P0700: Transmission Control System Malfunction (general transmission fault)
    • P0715: Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction
    • P0720: Output Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction
    • P0731-P0736: Incorrect Gear Ratio for specific gears
    • Codes related to clutch actuator performance or temperature sensors.
  3. Potential Causes:
    • Clutch Pack Wear: DCTs use dry clutch packs in many Hyundai models, which can wear out, especially with aggressive driving or extensive stop-and-go traffic.
    • Transmission Control Unit (TCU) Software: Sometimes, a simple software update from the dealership can resolve shifting anomalies.
    • Actuator Issues: The actuators that control clutch engagement and gear selection can fail or become sluggish.
    • Mechatronic Unit Failure: This integrated unit controls the hydraulic and electronic functions of the transmission.
    • Overheating: DCTs can be sensitive to overheating, especially in heavy traffic, which can lead to erratic shifting.
  4. When to See a Shop: You should take your Kona to a Hyundai dealership or a transmission specialist as soon as possible. Given the complexity of DCTs, DIY diagnosis is difficult. The dealership can check for any applicable TSBs, perform diagnostic tests specific to the DCT, and determine if it's a software issue, a component failure, or normal (though undesirable) DCT behavior. Early intervention can prevent more costly repairs down the line.
