Vehicle: 2020 Hyundai Kona Ultimate

Hey everyone,

My 2020 Hyundai Kona Ultimate's infotainment screen just went completely black today. It was working fine this morning, but now it's totally unresponsive. No radio, no navigation, no Apple CarPlay – nothing. The buttons around the screen don't do anything either.

I've tried turning the car off and on a few times, but no luck. Is there some kind of reset I can do, or is this a common problem with the Kona? I'm hoping it's not a costly fix.

Thanks for any advice!

A completely black and unresponsive infotainment screen on your 2020 Hyundai Kona Ultimate is definitely frustrating, as it impacts many core functions of the vehicle. This can be caused by a few different issues, ranging from simple software glitches to hardware failures.

Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

  1. Perform a Soft Reset: Many Hyundai infotainment systems have a small reset button. Look for a tiny pinhole, usually near the volume knob or on the side of the screen bezel. Use a paperclip or a pen tip to press and hold this button for 5-10 seconds. This often resolves minor software freezes.
  2. Check Fuses: A blown fuse can cut power to the head unit. Consult your owner's manual for the location of the fuse box (usually under the dash or in the engine bay) and identify the fuse(s) related to the 'Audio', 'Multimedia', or 'Infotainment' system. Visually inspect the fuse for a broken wire, or test it with a multimeter. Replace if necessary.
  3. Disconnect Battery: As a more aggressive reset, disconnect the negative terminal of your car battery for about 15-20 minutes. This can clear any lingering electrical gremlins in the system. Ensure the car is off and you have any necessary radio codes (though modern Hyundais usually don't require them after a battery disconnect).
  4. Check for Software Updates: While you can't access the screen, sometimes outdated software can lead to instability. If the screen comes back on after a reset, check for available system updates via the vehicle's settings or the Hyundai owner's portal.

Common Causes:

  • Software Freeze/Glitch: The most common cause, often resolved by a soft reset.
  • Blown Fuse: A power surge or short can blow the fuse protecting the head unit.
  • Loose Connection: Less common, but a connection behind the head unit could have come loose.
  • Head Unit Failure: In some cases, the infotainment head unit itself can fail, requiring replacement.

When to See a Shop: If none of the above steps bring your screen back to life, it's time to visit a Hyundai dealership or an automotive electronics specialist. They can:

  • Diagnose the system using specialized tools to identify internal faults.
  • Check for deeper wiring issues or module communication problems.
  • Determine if the head unit needs to be repaired or replaced. This can be a costly repair, so thorough diagnosis is crucial.
