Vehicle: 2023 Hyundai Kona N-Line

Hey everyone, I'm having a weird and frustrating issue with my 2023 Hyundai Kona N-Line. Sometimes when I try to start it using the push-button, I get a 'Key Not Detected' message on the dash, even though the key fob is clearly in the car with me. It's totally intermittent – sometimes it works perfectly, other times it takes multiple tries, or I have to hold the fob right up to the start button to get it to recognize it.

I've already replaced the battery in both key fobs, and it didn't make a difference. There are no other warning lights, and my OBD scanner shows no codes. This is a brand new car, and it's really annoying! Has anyone else with a newer Hyundai experienced this? What could be causing this key fob recognition problem?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The 'Key Not Detected' message with an intermittent push-button start issue in a new 2023 Hyundai Kona N-Line, even after replacing key fob batteries, points towards a problem with the vehicle's Smart Key System or immobilizer. This system relies on multiple components to communicate with your key fob.

Here are the most common causes for this issue:

  1. Interference: External radio frequency (RF) interference can disrupt the communication between your key fob and the car's receiver. This can come from strong Wi-Fi signals, power lines, or even other electronic devices in your pocket (like a cell phone or another key fob).
  2. Smart Key System Receiver Fault: The vehicle has an antenna or receiver that picks up the signal from your key fob. If this receiver is faulty, has a loose connection, or is obstructed, it won't reliably detect the key.
  3. Vehicle Battery (Low Voltage): While your car is new, a slightly weak 12V car battery can sometimes cause strange electrical gremlins, including issues with key detection, as the system may not be receiving optimal voltage.
  4. Key Fob Malfunction (Despite New Battery): Although you replaced the battery, the key fob itself could have an internal defect that causes intermittent signal transmission.
  5. Software Glitch: The vehicle's body control module (BCM) or smart key module could have a software bug that causes it to intermittently fail to recognize the key.

When to See a Shop:

  • Dealership Visit is Best: For a brand-new vehicle like your 2023 Kona, the dealership is the best place to take it. They have specialized diagnostic equipment to read specific codes from the Smart Key System (which are often B-codes, like B2A00 for Smart Key System Malfunction, or U-codes for communication issues, not typically visible with generic OBD-II scanners).
  • Warranty Coverage: Since your car is so new, this issue will almost certainly be covered under your factory warranty, so there should be no cost to you for diagnosis and repair.
  • Comprehensive Diagnosis: The dealership can perform a thorough check of the Smart Key receiver antennas, the key fobs themselves, and the vehicle's electrical system to pinpoint the exact cause of the intermittent detection problem.
