Vehicle: 2022 Hyundai Kona N-Line

Hey forum, I have a 2022 Hyundai Kona N-Line with about 25,000 miles. This morning, both my ABS and ESC (Electronic Stability Control) warning lights came on simultaneously on the dashboard. The brake pedal also feels a bit stiffer than usual, and I think the ABS might not be working correctly.

I tried turning the car off and on again, but the lights stayed on. I haven't noticed any major issues with braking performance yet, but I'm worried about driving with these critical safety systems disabled.

Has anyone experienced this with their Kona or other recent Hyundai models? What are the common causes for these lights to come on together? I'm planning to get it scanned, but any ideas on potential OBD codes or fixes would be helpful.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

  1. Understanding the Warning Lights: When both the ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and ESC (Electronic Stability Control) lights illuminate, it indicates a fault within the vehicle's braking and stability management systems. These systems often share sensors and control modules, so a fault in one can trigger the other. A stiffer brake pedal can also be a symptom of a related issue.
  2. Common Causes and OBD Codes:
    • Wheel Speed Sensors: This is the most common cause. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If a sensor is dirty, damaged, or has a wiring issue, the ABS/ESC module loses critical data, triggering the lights. Common OBD codes include C1200 (Wheel Speed Sensor) for a specific wheel, or a general sensor fault.
    • ABS Module Failure: The ABS control module itself can fail, either electronically or hydraulically. This is less common but can happen. OBD codes like C1611 (ABS/ESC ECU Fault) or similar module communication errors might appear.
    • Low Brake Fluid: While less likely to directly trigger ABS/ESC lights without a separate brake warning light, extremely low fluid can affect system performance.
    • Brake Light Switch: A faulty brake light switch can sometimes confuse the ESC system, though it's less common to trigger both ABS and ESC lights simultaneously.
    • Wiring Issues: Damaged wiring or connectors to the ABS module or wheel speed sensors can also cause these warnings.
  3. When to See a Shop: You should have your 2022 Kona diagnosed by a professional mechanic as soon as possible. Driving with disabled ABS and ESC means you lose critical safety features designed to prevent skidding and maintain control during hard braking or slippery conditions. A mechanic can use a specialized scan tool to read the specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) from the ABS/ESC module, which will pinpoint the exact problem and guide the repair.
