Vehicle: 2019 Hyundai Kona Ultimate

Hey everyone,

I'm having an issue with my 2019 Hyundai Kona Ultimate. Both the ABS warning light and the Traction Control (ESC) light came on simultaneously on my dashboard a few days ago, and they've stayed on since. The car seems to be driving fine, but I'm worried about the safety implications of these systems being disabled.

I haven't noticed any strange noises or changes in braking performance, but I know these lights usually mean something is wrong. I tried turning the car off and on, but the lights just come back on. I'm wondering if this is a common problem with the Kona or other Hyundais.

What could be causing both of these lights to illuminate? Is there anything I can check myself before taking it to a dealership? Thanks for any advice!

Hi Jessica,

When both the ABS and Traction Control (ESC) lights illuminate together, it almost always points to an issue with the Anti-lock Braking System, as the ESC system relies heavily on the ABS sensors and components. While the car might seem to drive fine, you've lost the functionality of these crucial safety systems.

Here are the most common causes:

  1. Faulty Wheel Speed Sensor (WSS): This is by far the most common reason. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If one sensor fails or its wiring is damaged, the ABS/ESC system can't accurately determine wheel speeds, leading to both lights coming on. Common OBD codes include C1200, C1201, C1202, C1203 (for specific wheel speed sensor faults).
  2. Damaged ABS Reluctor Ring: This is a toothed ring that the WSS reads. If it's cracked, corroded, or damaged, the sensor won't get an accurate reading.
  3. ABS Module Failure: Less common, but the ABS control module itself can fail. This is usually a more expensive repair.
  4. Low Brake Fluid Level: While less likely to trigger both lights without a specific brake fluid warning, extremely low fluid can sometimes confuse the system.
  5. Wiring Issues: Damaged or corroded wiring to the wheel speed sensors or the ABS module can also cause these lights to appear.

Diagnostics:

  • The best way to diagnose this is with an OBD-II scanner capable of reading ABS codes. A generic scanner might only show powertrain codes, but an advanced one will pull specific C-codes (Chassis codes) related to the ABS system. This will usually pinpoint which wheel speed sensor is at fault.
  • Visually inspect the wiring leading to each wheel speed sensor for any obvious damage.

When to See a Shop: Since both ABS and ESC are critical safety features, it's highly recommended to have your Kona inspected by a professional mechanic or dealership as soon as possible. They have specialized diagnostic tools that can read the specific ABS fault codes and accurately identify the problem. Driving without these systems means your wheels could lock up under hard braking, and you won't have traction control to prevent skidding, especially in adverse conditions.
