Vehicle: 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe Calligraphy

Hi all,

My 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe Calligraphy, with about 45,000 miles, has recently started having some really noticeable transmission issues. It's making hard shifts, especially between 2nd and 3rd gear, and sometimes feels like it's delaying engagement when I put it into drive or reverse.

The check engine light came on yesterday, and when I scanned it, I got a P0700 code. I know this is a generic transmission control system malfunction code, but I'm worried about what specific problem it might be pointing to.

Has anyone else experienced similar problems with their newer Santa Fe? What was the fix? I'm hoping it's not a major transmission overhaul.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The P0700 code (Transmission Control System Malfunction) is indeed a general code indicating that the Transmission Control Module (TCM) has detected a fault within the transmission system. It typically means there's another, more specific, transmission-related diagnostic trouble code (DTC) stored in the TCM's memory.

  1. Understanding P0700:

    • This code acts as a flag for the powertrain control module (PCM) that the TCM has an issue. It doesn't pinpoint the exact problem but alerts you to check the transmission system further.
    • The hard shifts and delayed engagement you're experiencing are classic symptoms of a transmission problem that would trigger this code.
  2. Common Underlying Causes for Transmission Issues (and P0700):

    • Low or Contaminated Transmission Fluid: Incorrect fluid levels or old, dirty fluid can severely impact transmission performance.
    • Faulty Transmission Solenoids: Solenoids control the flow of transmission fluid, and if one is sticking or failing, it can cause shifting problems.
    • Transmission Speed Sensors: Issues with input or output speed sensors can confuse the TCM, leading to erratic shifting.
    • Valve Body Issues: The valve body directs fluid to various parts of the transmission; a malfunction here can cause significant problems.
    • TCM Malfunction: Less common, but the control module itself could be faulty.
    • Internal Transmission Wear: Worn clutch packs or other internal components can cause hard shifts and slipping.
  3. Initial Steps & When to See a Shop:

    • Check Transmission Fluid: If safe to do so, check your transmission fluid level and condition. Refer to your owner's manual for the correct procedure and fluid type. Low or burnt-smelling fluid is a red flag.
    • Professional Scan: A standard OBD-II scanner will only show P0700. A professional-grade scanner used by a dealership or independent shop can access the TCM and retrieve the specific P07XX codes that are hidden behind the P0700, which will precisely identify the fault.
    • Do Not Delay: Transmission problems can escalate quickly. Driving with significant shifting issues can cause more extensive and costly damage. It's highly recommended to have your Santa Fe inspected by a qualified transmission specialist as soon as possible. They can diagnose the specific underlying code and recommend the appropriate repair, whether it's a fluid flush, solenoid replacement, or a more involved repair.
