Vehicle: 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Calligraphy

Hi all,

I'm driving a 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Calligraphy with the 2.5T engine, and it's only got about 35,000 miles on it. Recently, I've noticed a significant loss of power, especially when accelerating onto the highway. Along with this, there's a distinct whistling or whining noise coming from the engine bay, which gets louder under acceleration.

The check engine light came on yesterday, and I scanned it to find a P0299 code (Turbocharger/Supercharger Underboost). I'm worried this might be a serious turbo issue. Has anyone experienced this with their Santa Fe 2.5T or other Hyundai turbo models? What should I be looking for?

Thanks for any advice!

Mike, the symptoms you're describing – loss of power, a whistling noise, and the P0299 'Underboost' code – are classic indicators of a problem with your 2.5T engine's turbocharger system in your 2022 Santa Fe. This code specifically means the engine's boost pressure is lower than expected.

Here's a breakdown of potential causes and what to do:

  1. Common Causes for P0299 (Underboost):

    • Boost Leak: This is one of the most common culprits. A crack in an intercooler hose, a loose clamp, or a damaged intercooler itself can allow boost pressure to escape, causing the whistling sound and loss of power.
    • Wastegate Actuator/Valve Issues: The wastegate controls the exhaust gas flow to the turbine. If it's stuck open or its actuator is faulty, the turbo won't build sufficient boost.
    • Turbocharger Failure: While less common at 35,000 miles, internal damage to the turbocharger (e.g., worn bearings, damaged turbine/compressor wheels) can lead to reduced efficiency and noise. Lack of proper oil changes can contribute to this.
    • Diverter Valve/Bypass Valve Failure: This valve releases excess boost pressure when not needed. If it's stuck open, boost will be lost.
    • Clogged Catalytic Converter/Exhaust Restriction: Although less likely to cause a whistling sound, a restricted exhaust can hinder turbo performance.
  2. When to See a Shop:

    • Immediate Professional Diagnosis: It's critical to have your Santa Fe inspected by a qualified technician, preferably a Hyundai dealership, as soon as possible. Driving with an underboost condition can strain other engine components.
    • Visual Inspection: A technician will first visually inspect all turbocharger hoses, clamps, and the intercooler for any obvious leaks or damage.
    • Smoke Test: A smoke test can effectively identify small, hard-to-find boost leaks.
    • Turbocharger Inspection: They will check the wastegate operation and inspect the turbocharger itself for excessive shaft play or damage.
    • Warranty: Your 2022 Santa Fe is likely still under Hyundai's comprehensive warranty, so this repair should be covered. Do not attempt DIY repairs that could void your warranty.
