Vehicle: 2016 Hyundai Sonata Sport

I've got a 2016 Hyundai Sonata Sport with about 85,000 miles. Lately, when I hit the brakes, I get a noticeable vibration through the steering wheel and the brake pedal. It also feels like the car wants to pull to the right a bit when I'm slowing down.

I had the tires rotated recently, but it didn't help. Any ideas what's going on?

ClearTheCode admin answer: Vibrations during braking and a vehicle pulling to one side are classic symptoms of issues within your braking system or wheel alignment.

  1. Causes of Vibration During Braking:
    • Warped Brake Rotors: This is the most common cause. Uneven heating and cooling can cause rotors to warp, leading to pulsation through the pedal and steering wheel when braking.
    • Uneven Pad Wear: If brake pads wear unevenly, it can also cause vibration.
    • Loose Wheel Bearings: Though less common for braking-specific vibration, a failing wheel bearing can contribute to wobble.
  2. Causes of Pulling to One Side:
    • Brake Caliper Issues: A sticking brake caliper on one side can cause that wheel to brake harder, leading to a pull. The caliper might not be fully releasing, causing drag even when not braking.
    • Uneven Brake Pad Wear: If pads on one side are significantly more worn or contaminated, they might not apply pressure evenly.
    • Suspension/Steering Components: Worn ball joints, control arm bushings, or tie rod ends can cause a pull, especially under braking.
    • Alignment Issues: While you mentioned a rotation, a proper wheel alignment issue can also cause pulling.
  3. When to See a Shop:
    • Given both symptoms, it's crucial to have your vehicle inspected by a professional mechanic. They will likely check your brake rotors for runout, inspect calipers for proper function, and examine suspension components for wear.
    • Addressing these issues promptly is important for your safety and to prevent further damage to brake components or tires.
