Vehicle: 2017 Hyundai Sonata SE

My 2017 Hyundai Sonata SE with the 2.4L GDI engine has developed a worrying knocking sound, especially on cold starts. It's also consuming a lot more oil than usual, needing a top-up every 1500 miles or so.

The check engine light came on, and my OBD scanner shows a P1326 code. I've heard about issues with these engines. Is this a known problem? What are my options here? The car has about 90,000 miles on it.

The issues you're describing, particularly the knocking sound and the P1326 code, are unfortunately common with certain Hyundai 2.4L GDI engines from this era. The P1326 code specifically indicates an issue with the Knock Sensor Detection System, which often points to potential connecting rod bearing wear.

Here's what you should do:

  1. Stop Driving Immediately: If you are experiencing a persistent knocking sound and have a P1326 code, it is highly recommended to stop driving the vehicle as soon as safely possible. Continuing to drive could lead to catastrophic engine failure.
  2. Contact a Hyundai Dealership: This issue is often covered under an extended warranty or recall due to manufacturing defects with the connecting rod bearings. Hyundai has issued several recalls and service campaigns (like 19-01-006H and others) related to engine durability for these GDI engines.
  3. Check for Recalls/TSBs: Provide your VIN to the dealership. They can check for any open recalls, Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs), or warranty extensions that apply to your specific vehicle and engine.
  4. Diagnostic & Repair: The dealership will perform a diagnostic, which typically involves inspecting the engine for bearing damage. If diagnosed with internal engine damage related to the P1326 code, an engine replacement may be covered under warranty, even if your original powertrain warranty has expired, due to the extended warranty campaigns.

Causes: The primary cause of the P1326 code in these engines is often premature wear of the connecting rod bearings, leading to metal debris in the oil and eventual engine failure. The oil consumption can be a separate issue, sometimes related to piston ring wear or PCV system problems, but can also be exacerbated by internal engine damage.

When to See a Shop: You should see a Hyundai authorized service center immediately. Do not delay, as this is a serious safety and reliability concern that could leave you stranded or lead to a much more expensive repair if not addressed promptly under warranty.
