Vehicle: 2018 Hyundai Sonata SE

Hey everyone, I'm really concerned about my 2018 Hyundai Sonata SE with the 2.4L GDI engine. Lately, I've noticed a distinct knocking sound, especially when starting cold or accelerating. It sounds like it's coming from the engine bay.

On top of that, I've been burning through oil much faster than I ever have with previous cars. I check it regularly, and it seems to drop a significant amount between oil changes, sometimes requiring a top-off after only a couple thousand miles. The check engine light has also come on intermittently, sometimes with a P1326 code.

Has anyone else experienced these issues with their Sonata or other Hyundai models from this era? I'm worried about engine longevity and if this is a known problem. What should my next steps be?

It sounds like you're describing symptoms consistent with a known issue affecting certain Hyundai and Kia GDI engines, particularly the 2.4L and 2.0T Theta II engines. The P1326 code is a specific diagnostic trouble code (DTC) for Hyundai/Kia vehicles, indicating a problem with the Knock Sensor Detection System, often triggered by excessive engine knocking.

Here's what you should know and do:

  1. Understand the Cause: The knocking sound and oil consumption are often related to premature wear of connecting rod bearings or other internal engine components. The GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) design can also contribute to carbon buildup on intake valves, though the knocking is more directly linked to internal wear.
  2. Warranty Extension & Recalls: Hyundai issued a warranty extension (often to 10 years/120,000 miles) and recalls (like Recall 162/162A) for specific models and years due to these engine issues. Your 2018 Sonata likely falls within the affected range. The P1326 code is critical as it often triggers a specific diagnostic procedure at the dealership.
  3. Immediate Action: Schedule an appointment with a Hyundai dealership immediately. Inform them about the knocking sound, oil consumption, and the P1326 code. Do not delay, as continued driving with severe knocking can lead to catastrophic engine failure.
  4. Dealership Procedure: The dealership will perform a diagnostic procedure, which often includes an engine sound test, oil consumption test, and checking for specific software updates related to the knock sensor. If the P1326 code is active and specific criteria are met, it often leads to engine replacement under warranty.
  5. Documentation: Keep meticulous records of all your oil changes, any oil top-offs, and all dealership visits related to this issue. This documentation can be crucial if you encounter any warranty claim difficulties.

When to see a shop: You should see a Hyundai dealership as soon as possible. This is not a DIY fix and requires specialized diagnostic tools and potential engine replacement under warranty. Driving with a P1326 code and significant engine knocking can be dangerous and cause further damage.
