Vehicle: 2022 Hyundai Sonata Limited

Hi all, I'm having a persistent problem with the infotainment system in my 2022 Hyundai Sonata Limited. It's the one with the larger touchscreen. Lately, it's been freezing up randomly, sometimes for a few seconds, sometimes completely locking up until I turn the car off and on again. Even worse, it occasionally reboots itself while I'm driving, which is really disruptive, especially when I'm using navigation or Apple CarPlay.

I've tried doing a soft reset (holding the power button), and it helps temporarily, but the issue always comes back. There are no check engine lights, and my OBD scanner doesn't show any codes related to this. Is this a known issue with these systems, or could it be a deeper electrical problem? Any suggestions before I head to the dealership?

Infotainment system issues like freezing and random reboots are unfortunately not uncommon across various vehicle manufacturers, including Hyundai. While there isn't a specific OBD-II code for these problems (as they are typically internal system faults rather than powertrain or emissions related), it points to an electrical or software-related glitch within the head unit itself.

Here are the common causes and troubleshooting steps:

  1. Software Glitch/Bug: This is the most frequent cause. The system's operating software can develop bugs or become corrupted, leading to instability. Hyundai often releases software updates to address these issues.
  2. Corrupted Data: Over time, cached data or corrupted files from connected devices (like phones with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto) can interfere with the system's stability.
  3. Loose Electrical Connection: While less common for intermittent reboots, a loose power or ground connection to the head unit could cause power interruptions.
  4. Hardware Failure: In some cases, a component within the infotainment unit (e.g., processor, memory) may be failing, leading to instability.
  5. Overheating: Prolonged use or high ambient temperatures can sometimes cause the unit to overheat and temporarily malfunction or reboot.

When to See a Shop:

  • Dealership Visit Recommended: For infotainment issues, especially in a newer vehicle like your 2022 Sonata, a visit to the Hyundai dealership is highly recommended. They have specialized diagnostic tools to check for specific internal fault codes within the infotainment system that generic OBD-II scanners cannot read.
  • Software Update: The first thing the dealership will likely do is check for and apply any available software updates for your infotainment system. This often resolves many stability issues.
  • Hardware Diagnosis: If a software update doesn't fix the problem, they will proceed to diagnose potential hardware failures or wiring issues. This could involve testing the head unit itself or checking the wiring harness connections.
  • Warranty: Since your vehicle is a 2022 model, it's likely still under the factory warranty, so any repairs or replacements for the infotainment system should be covered.
