2017 Hyundai Tucson AC Not Blowing Cold & Strange Smell

Vehicle: 2017 Hyundai Tucson Sport

My 2017 Hyundai Tucson Sport's air conditioning has suddenly stopped blowing cold air. It just pushes out ambient temperature air, which is not ideal in this summer heat! On top of that, there's a really strange, musty, almost chemical smell coming from the vents when the AC is on, or even just the fan.

I've already checked the cabin air filter, and it was a bit dirty, so I replaced it, but that didn't help with either the cold air or the smell. I haven't seen any warning lights on the dash. I'm hoping it's not a major compressor issue, but I'm not sure where to start looking.

Has anyone else experienced this with their Tucson? What could be causing both the lack of cold air and the weird smell?

Experiencing a lack of cold air and a strange smell from your 2017 Hyundai Tucson's AC system are common complaints that can stem from several issues. While you've already tackled the cabin air filter, which is a great first step, other components likely need attention.

Here's a breakdown of potential causes and what to do:

  1. Lack of Cold Air - Potential Causes:
    • Low Refrigerant: The most common reason for an AC system not blowing cold is low refrigerant (R-134a) due to a leak. Even a small leak can deplete the system over time. This won't trigger a dash light but will prevent the compressor from engaging or cooling effectively.
    • AC Compressor Failure: The compressor is the heart of the AC system. If it's not engaging (you might not hear a distinct 'click' when turning on the AC), or if it's failing internally, it won't pressurize the refrigerant. This can sometimes be due to a faulty clutch or internal wear.
    • Condenser Blockage/Damage: The condenser, located in front of the radiator, can get clogged with debris or damaged by road hazards, impeding heat exchange.
    • Faulty Pressure Switch: A high or low-pressure switch can prevent the compressor from engaging if it detects incorrect system pressure.
    • Blend Door Actuator: Less likely for no cold air, but a faulty blend door actuator (which mixes hot and cold air) could prevent cold air from reaching the vents, even if the system is working.
  2. Strange Smell - Potential Causes:
    • Mold/Mildew on Evaporator: The musty smell is almost always due to mold or mildew growth on the evaporator core, which gets damp during AC operation. This is very common.
    • Refrigerant Leak: A chemical smell can sometimes indicate a refrigerant leak, especially if it's a sweet, chemical odor.
    • Debris in Vents: Small animals or leaves can get into the HVAC system and decompose, causing odors.
  3. Action Steps:
    • Professional AC System Check: Your first step should be to take your Tucson to a reputable automotive AC specialist or a Hyundai dealership. They can perform a diagnostic check, which includes:
      • Refrigerant Level Check: They will measure the refrigerant pressure and level. If low, they'll look for leaks using dye or an electronic leak detector.
      • Compressor Check: Verify the compressor is engaging and building proper pressure.
      • Evaporator Cleaning: If mold/mildew is suspected, they can perform an evaporator cleaning service using specialized foam or spray to kill the growth and eliminate the smell.
    • Check for TSBs: Ask the dealership if there are any Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) related to AC performance or odors for your 2017 Tucson.

When to see a shop: You should see a professional AC technician or Hyundai dealership as soon as possible. Diagnosing AC issues requires specialized equipment, and attempting to recharge the system yourself without addressing a leak will only be a temporary fix and can introduce moisture, causing further damage.
