Vehicle: 2017 Infiniti Q50 Red Sport

My 2017 Infiniti Q50 Red Sport has been having some serious issues with its infotainment system lately. It frequently freezes, sometimes completely goes black, and then randomly reboots. It's making navigation and audio almost unusable.

I've tried restarting the car, but the problem persists. This happens whether I'm using Apple CarPlay or just the native system. It seems to be getting worse over time.

Is this a known issue for this model year? I'm worried about a costly repair if it's the entire head unit.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

  1. Soft Reset: Try holding down the audio power button for about 10-15 seconds until the system reboots. This can sometimes clear temporary software glitches. If your Q50 has two screens, try holding the power button for the upper screen.
  2. Check for Updates: Visit your Infiniti dealer. There might be a software update available for the infotainment system that addresses known bugs or improves stability for your specific model year.
  3. Battery Disconnect: Disconnect the negative terminal of your car battery for 15-30 minutes, then reconnect. This can reset various modules, including the infotainment unit. Ensure you have your radio code if applicable (though modern Infiniti systems often don't require one after a battery disconnect).
  4. Wiring Inspection: Intermittent issues can sometimes be caused by loose or corroded connections to the infotainment unit or related modules. A technician can inspect these connections for integrity.

Causes: Common causes include software bugs, a failing infotainment control unit (head unit), issues with the Body Control Module (BCM) that communicates with the infotainment, or power supply irregularities. Less commonly, a faulty USB port or device connected to it can cause system instability.

When to See a Shop: If the soft reset and battery disconnect don't resolve the issue, or if it recurs frequently, it's best to take your Q50 to an authorized Infiniti service center. They have diagnostic tools (CONSULT-III Plus) that can communicate directly with the infotainment system and other modules to pinpoint the exact cause of the malfunction. They can also check for relevant Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) for your specific model year that might address this exact problem.
