Vehicle: 2018 Infiniti Q50 3.0t Luxe

Hey everyone,

I have a 2018 Infiniti Q50 3.0t Luxe with about 70,000 miles on it. I'm starting to think about the transmission fluid. Is this something that needs to be changed, or is it considered a 'lifetime' fluid by Infiniti?

If it does need changing, is it a DIY-friendly job, or should I just bite the bullet and take it to the dealer? I've heard some modern transmissions are sealed units, making it tricky. Any advice on intervals or specific fluid types would be greatly appreciated!

It's great you're thinking proactively about your 2018 Infiniti Q50's transmission fluid. While some manufacturers market fluids as 'lifetime,' it's generally recommended to service transmission fluid, especially as your vehicle approaches higher mileage or if you engage in heavy driving conditions (towing, frequent stop-and-go).

  1. Recommended Interval: For the 7-speed automatic transmission in your Q50, Infiniti typically recommends inspecting the fluid at 60,000 miles and replacing it around 90,000-100,000 miles, or sooner if you drive under severe conditions. Consult your owner's manual for the precise schedule for your specific trim.
  2. DIY Feasibility: A transmission fluid drain and fill is generally feasible for a DIYer with the right tools and knowledge. However, a full flush often requires specialized equipment. The Q50's transmission is not entirely 'sealed' in the sense that it has drain and fill plugs, but getting the fluid level correct can be tricky due to temperature-dependent level checks.
  3. Fluid Type: You must use the correct Nissan Matic S fluid (or an equivalent compatible fluid). Using the wrong fluid can cause significant transmission damage.
  4. DIY Steps (General):
    • Warm up the engine/transmission to operating temperature.
    • Locate the drain plug on the transmission pan and drain the old fluid.
    • Replace the drain plug with a new washer.
    • Locate the fill plug (often on the side of the transmission) and refill with the specified amount of new fluid.
    • Start the engine, shift through all gears, and recheck the fluid level using the dipstick (if present) or by following the specific temperature-based procedure outlined in the service manual.
  5. When to See a Shop:
    • If you're uncomfortable with the process, especially ensuring the correct fluid level and temperature.
    • If you want a full transmission flush rather than just a drain and fill.
    • If you notice any unusual shifting, slipping, or warning lights, as these could indicate a more serious issue requiring professional diagnosis.
