Vehicle: 2018 Infiniti Q50 3.0t Luxe

Hey everyone,

I've got a really annoying clunking noise coming from the front end of my 2018 Infiniti Q50 3.0t Luxe. It seems to happen most often when I go over small bumps, uneven pavement, or speed bumps at low speeds. It's not a constant noise, but it's definitely noticeable and getting worse.

I've checked the lug nuts, and they're all tight. The car has about 65,000 miles on it. I'm worried it might be something serious with the suspension. Has anyone else experienced this with their Q50, especially around this model year?

What should I be looking for? Any common culprits for this kind of noise on these cars? Thanks in advance for any help!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A clunking noise from the front suspension of your 2018 Infiniti Q50 is a common complaint and can be attributed to several components. It's important to address this promptly to avoid further wear or potential safety issues.

Here are the most common causes and steps you can take:

  1. Sway Bar End Links: These are a very frequent source of clunking noises. The ball joints on the end links can wear out, causing play and a metallic clunk, especially over small, uneven surfaces. You can often visually inspect them for torn boots or excessive play by trying to move them by hand when the car is on a lift or jack stands.
  2. Lower Control Arm Bushings: The bushings in the lower control arms, particularly the front and rear ones, can degrade over time. When these rubber bushings crack or tear, they allow metal-on-metal contact or excessive movement, leading to a clunk. This is often more noticeable during braking or acceleration, or over larger bumps.
  3. Strut Mounts/Bearings: The top strut mounts or the strut bearings can wear out. A worn strut bearing can cause a clunking or popping noise when turning the steering wheel or going over bumps. A failing strut mount can also lead to excessive movement of the strut assembly.
  4. Ball Joints: While less common than end links or control arm bushings, worn lower ball joints can also produce a clunking sound. These are critical for steering and suspension integrity.

When to See a Shop:

If you're not comfortable inspecting these components yourself, or if a visual inspection doesn't reveal an obvious issue, it's highly recommended to take your 2018 Infiniti Q50 to a reputable mechanic specializing in suspension work. They can perform a thorough inspection, often using specialized tools to check for play in various components. Ignoring a persistent clunking noise can lead to accelerated wear on other suspension parts, affect handling, and potentially compromise safety. Early diagnosis can save you from more expensive repairs down the line.
