Vehicle: 2018 Infiniti Q50 Red Sport

Hey everyone,

I've been having a really frustrating issue with my 2018 Infiniti Q50 Red Sport. The dual infotainment screens will randomly freeze, become unresponsive to touch, and sometimes go completely black. It seems to happen without any pattern – sometimes right after starting, other times in the middle of a drive.

Restarting the car sometimes fixes it temporarily, but the problem always comes back. It's making navigation and using the car's features almost impossible. Has anyone else experienced this with their Q50? What could be causing this electrical nightmare?

Any advice or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated before I take it to the dealership.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Infotainment system issues like freezing, unresponsiveness, or a black screen in your 2018 Infiniti Q50 can be frustrating. These problems often stem from a few common electrical causes:

  1. Software Glitch/Bug: The most common cause is often a software issue within the infotainment unit. Updates or a system reset can sometimes resolve this.
  2. Loose Electrical Connection: A loose or corroded connection to the head unit or display modules can cause intermittent power loss or communication errors.
  3. Faulty Infotainment Control Unit (ICU): The main control module for the infotainment system can fail, leading to erratic behavior or complete shutdown.
  4. Overheating: While less common, the unit could be overheating, causing it to shut down or malfunction.
  5. Battery/Charging System Issues: Although less direct, an unstable power supply from the car's battery or alternator can sometimes manifest as electrical glitches in various systems.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Perform a Hard Reset: Try disconnecting the negative terminal of your car battery for 10-15 minutes, then reconnecting it. This can sometimes reset the entire electrical system, including the infotainment.
  2. Check for Software Updates: Visit an Infiniti dealership. They can check if there are any pending software updates for your Q50's infotainment system that might address known bugs.
  3. Inspect Fuses: Locate the fuse box (often under the hood and/or inside the cabin) and check the fuses related to the audio/infotainment system. A blown fuse can cause power issues.

When to See a Shop:

If the problem persists after a battery reset and fuse check, or if you're uncomfortable performing these steps, it's best to take your vehicle to an authorized Infiniti service center. They have diagnostic tools specific to Infiniti vehicles that can read communication codes (U-codes) or B-codes (body control module codes) that might not trigger a check engine light but are crucial for diagnosing infotainment system faults. A professional can accurately diagnose whether it's a software issue, a wiring problem, or a faulty component requiring replacement.
