Vehicle: 2018 Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400

My 2018 Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400 has been acting up lately. I've noticed a significant loss of power, especially during acceleration, and it feels like the turbos aren't spooling up correctly. Sometimes it feels like the car is struggling to get up to speed, almost like it's in limp mode.

I haven't seen any check engine lights yet, but the performance drop is very noticeable. It's making highway driving a bit concerning.

Has anyone else with a VR30DDTT engine experienced this? What should I be looking for?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

  1. Check for OBD-II Codes: Even if the light isn't on, a pending code might exist. Common codes for turbo issues include:

    • P0299 (Turbo/Super Charger Underboost)
    • P0234 (Turbo/Super Charger Overboost)
    • P00BD (Mass Air Flow Circuit Range/Performance - Air Flow Too High)
  2. Common Causes for VR30DDTT Power Loss:

    • Turbo Wastegate Actuators: These are known to fail on early VR30DDTT engines, leading to incorrect boost pressure.
    • Boost Leaks: Check all intercooler piping and connections for cracks or loose clamps. A leak can cause significant power loss.
    • Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor: A dirty or failing MAF sensor can send incorrect air readings to the ECU, affecting fuel delivery and boost.
    • Spark Plugs: Worn or incorrect spark plugs can lead to misfires and reduced power, especially under boost.
    • Fuel System Issues: Clogged fuel injectors or a failing fuel pump could also contribute to power loss.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • If you have a persistent check engine light.
    • If the power loss is severe or the car enters "limp mode."
    • If you hear unusual noises from the engine bay (e.g., whistling, grinding).
    • A qualified Infiniti technician can perform a diagnostic scan, check boost pressures, and inspect the turbo system components thoroughly. Addressing these issues promptly can prevent more extensive damage.
