Vehicle: 2019 Infiniti Q50 3.0t Luxe

Hey everyone,

I'm having a really frustrating issue with my 2019 Infiniti Q50 3.0t Luxe. The infotainment screen, especially the lower one, keeps freezing up. Sometimes it goes completely black, and other times it just becomes unresponsive to touch.

It happens randomly, sometimes right after starting the car, sometimes after driving for a bit. I've tried restarting the car, but it doesn't always fix it. It's making navigation and media control a real pain. Has anyone else experienced this with their Q50, and if so, what was the fix?

Thanks for any help!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Infotainment system issues like freezing or unresponsiveness are common and can stem from several causes. Here's a breakdown of potential steps and considerations:

  1. Soft Reset: Many Infiniti models allow for a soft reset of the infotainment system. This often involves holding down the power button for the audio system for 10-15 seconds until the system reboots. Check your owner's manual for the specific procedure for your 2019 Q50.
  2. Firmware Update: Outdated software is a frequent culprit. Infiniti periodically releases firmware updates for their infotainment systems to address bugs and improve stability. A dealership can check if your system has the latest software version and perform an update if necessary.
  3. Battery Disconnect/Reconnect: A more drastic reset involves disconnecting the car's negative battery terminal for 15-30 minutes, then reconnecting it. This can clear temporary electrical glitches. Be aware that this might reset other vehicle settings, like radio presets.
  4. Check for Loose Connections: While less common for intermittent issues, a loose wiring harness behind the head unit could cause problems. This usually requires professional inspection.
  5. Hardware Failure: In some cases, the infotainment control unit itself, or one of its components (like the screen digitizer), might be failing. This would necessitate replacement.

When to See a Shop:

  • If soft resets and battery disconnects don't resolve the issue.
  • If the problem is persistent and affects critical functions like navigation or backup camera display.
  • If you suspect a firmware update is needed or a hardware component might be faulty.

There are typically no specific OBD-II codes for infotainment system freezes, as these are often internal system errors rather than powertrain or emissions-related faults. A dealership's diagnostic tools can often pull specific codes from the infotainment module itself.
