Vehicle: 2017 Infiniti Q50 Red Sport

My 2017 Infiniti Q50 Red Sport has developed a really annoying brake squeal, especially at low speeds. It's not constant, but happens frequently when coming to a stop.

I also feel a noticeable vibration in the steering wheel when braking from higher speeds, like on the highway. It's got about 60,000 miles on it and I haven't had the brakes serviced beyond routine inspections. What could be causing this combination of issues?

Brake squeal and steering wheel vibration during braking are common symptoms that often point to specific issues within your braking system. Given your mileage, it's likely time for a thorough inspection.

Here's what's likely happening and what to check:

  1. Worn Brake Pads: Squealing is frequently caused by worn brake pads. Most pads have a wear indicator that makes a high-pitched sound when they're nearing the end of their life. If the pads are severely worn, the metal backing plate can contact the rotor, causing a grinding noise and potential damage.
  2. Warped Brake Rotors: The vibration you feel in the steering wheel, especially at higher speeds, is a classic sign of warped brake rotors. Rotors can warp due to excessive heat, causing an uneven surface that the brake pads grab inconsistently. This pulsation is transmitted through the calipers to the steering system.
  3. Brake Caliper Issues: Less common, but a sticking caliper piston or a caliper that isn't sliding freely can cause uneven pad wear, leading to both squealing and vibration. The caliper might not be releasing properly, causing constant friction and heat buildup.
  4. Contamination: Sometimes, brake pads can become contaminated with oil, grease, or brake fluid, which can lead to squealing. While less likely to cause vibration, it's worth noting.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately: If the vibration is severe, or if you hear grinding noises, it's crucial to have your vehicle inspected by a professional mechanic as soon as possible. These symptoms indicate significant wear or damage that could compromise your braking ability.
  • Routine Service: Even if the symptoms are mild, it's best to address them promptly. Ignoring brake issues can lead to more extensive and costly repairs, and more importantly, can be a safety hazard. A shop can accurately diagnose whether you need new pads, rotors, or a caliper service.
