Vehicle: 2018 Infiniti Q50 3.0t LUXE

Hey everyone,

I've been noticing a persistent squealing noise from my brakes lately, especially at lower speeds or when coming to a complete stop. It's a 2018 Infiniti Q50 3.0t LUXE with about 55,000 miles on it.

Alongside the squeal, I'm also feeling a slight vibration through the pedal when I apply the brakes, not super intense, but definitely noticeable. It's been happening for a couple of weeks now and seems to be getting a bit worse.

I'm wondering if this is just normal wear and tear, or if it could be something more serious. Any thoughts or similar experiences out there?

It sounds like you're experiencing common symptoms of brake wear, but it's important to address them promptly to ensure safety and prevent further damage. Here's a breakdown:

  1. Causes of Squealing:

    • Worn Brake Pads: Most brake pads have a small metal indicator that squeals when the pads are worn down to a certain level, signaling it's time for replacement.
    • Glazed Rotors/Pads: If the brake components get overheated, the surface can become hardened or 'glazed,' leading to squealing.
    • Contamination: Dirt, dust, or moisture on the pads or rotors can also cause noise.
    • Improper Installation: If pads or shims weren't installed correctly during the last brake service, they might squeal.
  2. Causes of Vibration (Pulsation):

    • Warped Rotors: This is the most common cause. When rotors overheat, they can develop uneven surfaces, causing the pedal to pulsate as the pads contact these high and low spots.
    • Uneven Pad Wear: If brake pads wear unevenly, it can also contribute to vibration.
    • Loose Caliper or Wheel Bearings: Less common, but a loose caliper or worn wheel bearing could also manifest as vibration during braking.
  3. Troubleshooting Steps You Can Take:

    • Visually inspect your brake pads and rotors if you're comfortable. Look for significant scoring on the rotors or very thin pads.
    • Note if the squealing changes with light versus heavy braking.
  4. When to See a Shop:

    • Immediately: Given you have both squealing and vibration, it's highly recommended to have your Infiniti Q50 inspected by a professional mechanic as soon as possible. Warped rotors can reduce braking efficiency, and severely worn pads can lead to metal-on-metal contact, which is dangerous and will cause much more expensive damage.
    • A shop will be able to accurately diagnose if you need new pads, rotors (or rotor resurfacing), or if there's an issue with your calipers or other components.
