Q50 Transmission Fluid Service - When is it really needed?

Vehicle: 2017 Infiniti Q50 Red Sport

Hey everyone,

I have a 2017 Infiniti Q50 3.0t Red Sport with about 75,000 miles on it. I've been reading conflicting info online about transmission fluid changes. Some say it's 'lifetime' fluid, others say it absolutely needs to be changed, especially with how I drive (a bit spirited at times).

Lately, I've noticed a very slight hesitation or shudder when shifting under harder acceleration, and sometimes a less smooth downshift. Is this a sign the fluid needs attention? What's the recommended interval for our cars, and is this something a DIYer can tackle, or should I take it to a shop?

Thanks for any advice!

Hello Chris M.,

It's a common misconception that 'lifetime' fluid means it never needs changing. For most transmissions, especially under spirited driving conditions or in hot climates, 'lifetime' usually refers to the expected life of the original owner or a certain mileage, often around 60,000-100,000 miles. Infiniti's official stance for many models is often 'inspect, and replace only if necessary,' but many experienced technicians and enthusiasts recommend proactive maintenance.

Here's what you should consider:

  1. Symptoms: The slight hesitation or shuddering you describe can indeed be an early indicator of degraded transmission fluid. Old fluid loses its lubricating properties and can lead to increased friction and heat, affecting shift quality.
  2. Intervals: While Infiniti may not specify a rigid interval for normal use, for your 2017 Q50 3.0t, especially with your driving style, a transmission fluid drain and fill (not a flush) every 60,000-80,000 miles is a wise preventative measure. Some even do it sooner, around 40,000-50,000 miles, if towing or driving aggressively.
  3. Fluid Type: Ensure you use the correct Nissan Matic S or equivalent fluid. Using the wrong fluid can cause serious transmission damage.
  4. DIY vs. Shop: A simple drain and fill can be a DIY job for those comfortable working under their car, but it requires specific tools (like a pump to refill through the fill plug) and careful attention to fluid level (often checked at specific temperatures). A full fluid exchange (not a pressurized flush, which can dislodge debris) is usually best left to a professional shop with the right equipment and expertise, especially for your performance model. Given your symptoms, a shop can also diagnose if there are other underlying issues.
  5. Causes of Degradation: High temperatures from aggressive driving, stop-and-go traffic, and heavy loads accelerate fluid breakdown. The VR30DDTT engine in your Red Sport can generate significant power, putting more stress on the drivetrain.

When to See a Shop:

  • If the shuddering worsens or becomes more frequent.
  • If you notice any warning lights on your dashboard.
  • If you're unsure about the DIY process or fluid level checks.
  • For a comprehensive diagnosis if the fluid change doesn't resolve the issue completely, as it could indicate internal transmission wear.
