Vehicle: 2017 Infiniti Q60 3.0t Premium

Hello everyone,

I own a 2017 Infiniti Q60 3.0t Premium, and I've run into a frustrating electrical problem. My driver's side LED headlight has completely gone out, and I'm getting a 'Headlight System Malfunction' message on my dashboard. The passenger side works perfectly fine.

I've heard these LED headlights can be tricky and expensive to fix. Is this a common issue with the Q60s? Could it be a fuse, a ballast, or the entire LED assembly? I'm hoping it's not the latter.

Any advice or shared experiences on diagnosing and fixing this would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Experiencing a headlight malfunction and a dead LED headlight on your 2017 Infiniti Q60 is a common concern, especially with advanced lighting systems. These systems are more complex than traditional halogen setups.

Common Causes:

  1. Faulty LED Headlight Assembly: The most common cause for a complete outage of an LED headlight, especially if the 'malfunction' message appears, is often a failure within the LED module itself or the entire assembly. LEDs are usually long-lasting, but individual components can fail.
  2. LED Driver/Ballast Module Failure: LED headlights use a 'driver' or 'ballast' to regulate power. If this module fails, the LED unit won't receive the correct power and will go out.
  3. Wiring or Connector Issues: A loose, corroded, or damaged wire or connector leading to the headlight assembly or its driver module can interrupt power.
  4. Fuse: While less common for an entire LED unit to go out due to a single fuse (as they often have multiple circuits), it's always worth checking.
  5. Body Control Module (BCM) Issue: In rare cases, the BCM, which controls various electrical components including lighting, could have a fault affecting one side.

Troubleshooting Steps & OBD Codes:

  1. Check Fuses: Consult your owner's manual for the location of the fuses related to the exterior lighting and check the relevant fuse for the affected headlight.
  2. Visual Inspection: Look for any obvious signs of damage to the headlight assembly, wiring, or connectors.
  3. OBD Codes: A professional diagnostic scan will likely reveal B-codes (Body Control Module codes) or U-codes (Network Communication codes) related to the lighting system, such as:
    • B2601: Headlamp Low Beam Circuit Malfunction (Left/Right)
    • B2602: Headlamp High Beam Circuit Malfunction (Left/Right)
    • U0140: Lost Communication With Body Control Module

When to See a Shop:

Given the complexity and cost of LED headlight systems, it's highly recommended to take your Q60 to an Infiniti dealership or a specialist auto electrical shop. They have the specific diagnostic tools to pinpoint whether the issue is the LED module, the driver, wiring, or a control module. Attempting DIY repairs on these systems without proper knowledge can be costly or cause further damage. Replacing an entire LED headlight assembly can be very expensive, so accurate diagnosis is key.
