Vehicle: 2017 Infiniti Q60 Red Sport 400

Hey everyone,

I've got a problem with my 2017 Infiniti Q60 Red Sport 400. The battery warning light on the dashboard came on a couple of days ago and hasn't gone off. I've also noticed that my headlights and interior lights seem to dim intermittently, especially when I'm at a stoplight or idling. The car also feels a bit sluggish to start sometimes, though it hasn't completely died yet.

I had the battery tested at an auto parts store, and they said the battery itself is good. This makes me think it's more likely an issue with the charging system, possibly the alternator. Has anyone experienced these symptoms with their Q60? Could it be something else, like a voltage regulator or a loose connection?

I want to get this fixed before I end up stranded. Any advice on what to check or what the common culprits are would be super helpful!

Your symptoms – battery light on, dimming lights, and sluggish starting despite a good battery – are classic indicators of a failing charging system, most commonly the alternator. Here's a breakdown of what's likely happening and what to do:

  1. Alternator Failure: The alternator is responsible for generating electrical power to run your car's electrical systems and recharge the battery while the engine is running. If it's failing, it won't produce enough voltage, causing the battery to slowly discharge and the electrical components to receive insufficient power.
  2. Voltage Regulator: The voltage regulator is often integrated into the alternator. Its job is to maintain a consistent output voltage. If it fails, the alternator might overcharge or undercharge the battery, leading to similar symptoms.
  3. Loose/Corroded Connections: Check the battery terminals and the main power cable running from the alternator to the battery. Ensure they are clean, tight, and free of corrosion. A poor connection can impede proper charging.
  4. Serpentine Belt: Ensure the serpentine belt, which drives the alternator, is in good condition and properly tensioned. A slipping or broken belt will prevent the alternator from spinning.
  5. Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): A failing charging system will almost certainly trigger specific OBD-II codes. Look for:
    • P0562: System Voltage Low (indicates the battery isn't receiving enough charge)
    • P0563: System Voltage High (less common, but indicates overcharging)
    • P0620: Generator Control Circuit Malfunction
    • P0622: Generator F-Terminal Circuit Malfunction

When to See a Shop: Since your battery has already been tested as good, the next logical step is to have the charging system professionally diagnosed. Most auto parts stores can perform a basic charging system test, but a qualified mechanic or Infiniti dealership can perform a more thorough analysis. They can test the alternator's output under load, check the voltage regulator, and inspect all associated wiring. Driving with a failing alternator can lead to your car dying unexpectedly, potentially damaging the battery, and even causing issues with other electrical components due to unstable voltage. Get it checked out soon to avoid being stranded.
