Vehicle: 2018 Infiniti Q60 Red Sport 400

Hey everyone,

I'm having a really annoying problem with my 2018 Infiniti Q60 Red Sport 400. Sometimes, when I try to start the car, I get a 'Key Fob Not Detected' message, even though the key is right there in my pocket or the cup holder. I have to hold the key fob right up to the start button for it to work, and even then, it's not always immediate.

Both key fobs are doing this, and I've already replaced the batteries in both of them, but it didn't make a difference. It's making me nervous about getting stranded. Has anyone else experienced this with their Q60 or other Infiniti models? What was the fix?

Thanks for any advice!

'Key Fob Not Detected' issues, especially after replacing key fob batteries, can be frustrating and point to several potential causes in your 2018 Q60. Here's what to consider:

  1. Weak Car Battery: A low 12V car battery can sometimes cause various electrical gremlins, including issues with key fob detection and push-button start. Even if it starts the car, a weak battery might not provide enough stable voltage for all modules.
  2. Interference: Electronic interference from other devices (e.g., cell phones, strong Wi-Fi signals, even certain LED lights) can sometimes disrupt the key fob's signal. Try starting the car with fewer devices in the immediate vicinity.
  3. Key Fob Antenna/Receiver Issues: The car has antennas that detect the key fob's signal. If one of these antennas or the associated receiver module is faulty, it can lead to intermittent detection problems. These components can be located in various parts of the cabin.
  4. Ignition Switch/Start Button Fault: While less common, a faulty push-button start switch itself could be the culprit, though it usually manifests as a complete failure rather than intermittent detection issues.
  5. BCM (Body Control Module) Issues: The BCM manages many of the car's electrical functions, including keyless entry and start. A fault in the BCM could lead to communication problems with the key fob system.
  6. Key Fob Programming: Although you replaced batteries, sometimes a key fob can lose its programming, or there might be an issue with the car's recognition of the fob's unique code.

When to See a Shop:

  • If replacing key fob batteries doesn't resolve the issue.
  • If you've tried starting the car with the fob in the emergency slot (usually near the start button or in a specific console slot, check your manual) and still experience issues.
  • If the problem is consistent across both key fobs.
  • A dealership or qualified automotive locksmith can diagnose issues with the key fob system, check for faulty antennas, and reprogram or inspect the BCM. There are no generic OBD-II codes for key fob detection issues, but Infiniti's diagnostic tools can access specific codes related to the Intelligent Key system.
