2018 Q60 Red Sport - Hard Starts and Occasional Stalling

Vehicle: 2018 Infiniti Q60 Red Sport 400

I'm having some frustrating issues with my 2018 Infiniti Q60 Red Sport 400, which has about 50,000 miles on it. Lately, it's been taking longer to start, especially after sitting for a few hours. It cranks for a bit before finally catching. Even more concerning, it's stalled on me twice at low speeds, once while pulling into a parking spot and another time at a stop light.

When it stalls, it usually starts back up after a few tries. I'm thinking it might be a fuel delivery problem, maybe the fuel pump or injectors? No check engine light yet, which is weird. Any ideas on what could be going on?

Hard starts and occasional stalling in your 2018 Infiniti Q60 Red Sport 400, especially without a check engine light, strongly suggest an intermittent fuel delivery issue. The VR30DDTT engine relies on a precise fuel system.

  1. Fuel Pump (Low Pressure): The primary fuel pump in the tank could be weakening. If it's not consistently delivering enough fuel pressure to the high-pressure pump, it can cause hard starts and stalling. This might not immediately trigger a CEL if the pressure drop is intermittent.
  2. High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP): The VR30DDTT uses a direct injection system with a high-pressure fuel pump. A failing HPFP can lead to insufficient fuel pressure at the injectors, causing the engine to struggle or stall. Diagnostic codes like P0087 (Fuel Rail/System Pressure - Too Low) are common with HPFP issues.
  3. Fuel Pressure Sensor: A faulty fuel pressure sensor can send incorrect readings to the engine control unit (ECU), leading to improper fuel delivery. This can cause both hard starts and stalling.
  4. Clogged Fuel Filter: While less common on newer vehicles with 'lifetime' filters, a severely clogged fuel filter can restrict fuel flow, especially under demand, leading to similar symptoms. However, the VR30DDTT often integrates the filter into the fuel pump assembly.
  5. Fuel Injectors: Leaky or clogged fuel injectors can cause poor atomization or inconsistent fuel delivery. Leaky injectors can also lead to fuel rail pressure drop when the car sits, causing hard starts.
  6. Vacuum Leaks: Though less likely to cause stalling, a significant vacuum leak can affect the air-fuel mixture and contribute to rough idling or hesitation.

When to See a Shop: It's critical to have this diagnosed by a professional. A technician can connect a diagnostic scanner to monitor fuel pressure in real-time during starting and driving conditions. They can also check for pending or historical fault codes that haven't illuminated the CEL yet. Addressing fuel system issues promptly is important to prevent potential engine damage.
