Vehicle: 2017 Infiniti Q60 Red Sport 400

Hello Infiniti forum,

I'm having an issue with my 2017 Q60 Red Sport 400. Both the ABS light and the Traction Control (VDC) light have come on simultaneously on my dashboard. This happened a few days ago after I hit a small pothole, but they've stayed on since.

I haven't noticed any significant changes in driving performance or braking, but it's concerning to have these safety lights illuminated. I tried turning the car off and on, but they remain. What could be causing both of these lights to come on at the same time?

Any insights would be helpful!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

When both the ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and VDC (Vehicle Dynamic Control, or Traction Control) lights illuminate simultaneously on your 2017 Infiniti Q60, it typically points to a shared component or system that affects both functions. The fact that it happened after hitting a pothole is a significant clue.

Here are the most common causes and diagnostic steps:

  1. Wheel Speed Sensor Failure: This is the most frequent culprit. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If a sensor is damaged (e.g., from a pothole), dirty, or its wiring is compromised, the ABS and VDC systems lose critical data, causing both lights to come on. A diagnostic scan tool can usually pinpoint which sensor is faulty.
  2. ABS Module Malfunction: Less common, but the ABS control module itself could be failing. This module processes data from the wheel speed sensors and controls the ABS and VDC systems. Internal failures or power supply issues can cause both lights.
  3. Wiring or Connector Issues: Damage to the wiring harness leading to a wheel speed sensor or the ABS module can interrupt communication, triggering the warning lights. The pothole impact could have jostled a loose connection or damaged a wire.
  4. Low Brake Fluid: While less likely to trigger both lights simultaneously without other symptoms, extremely low brake fluid can sometimes affect braking system warnings.

When to see a shop:

While your car might seem to drive normally, the ABS and VDC systems are crucial for safety, especially in emergency braking or slippery conditions. Without them, your car's ability to prevent wheel lock-up and maintain traction is compromised. You should schedule an appointment with an Infiniti dealership or a trusted independent mechanic as soon as possible. They can use a specialized scan tool to read the specific ABS/VDC codes, which are different from standard OBD-II engine codes, and accurately diagnose the issue.
