Vehicle: 2019 Infiniti Q60 3.0t

Hello! My 2019 Infiniti Q60 3.0t, with about 60,000 miles, suddenly had the ABS and Traction Control warning lights illuminate on the dashboard yesterday. There wasn't any specific event that triggered it, just came on during my commute.

The car seems to be driving fine, and I haven't noticed any issues with braking performance, though I haven't tried to engage ABS since the lights came on. I checked the brake fluid, and it's at the max level.

I'm thinking it might be a wheel speed sensor, but I'm not sure which one or how to diagnose it without a scanner. Has anyone experienced this with their Q60? What OBD codes should I look for?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

It's common for the ABS and Traction Control (TCS) lights to illuminate together on your 2019 Infiniti Q60 3.0t, as these systems are interconnected and rely on similar sensor inputs. While the car may seem to drive fine, it's important to note that both ABS and TCS functions will likely be disabled when these lights are on, impacting your vehicle's safety features.

Common Causes & Relevant OBD Codes:

  1. Wheel Speed Sensors (WSS): This is the most frequent cause. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If one fails, is dirty, or has a damaged wire, the ABS/TCS module loses crucial data. Common codes associated with WSS issues include:
    • C0031: Left Front Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit
    • C0034: Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit
    • C0037: Left Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit
    • C0040: Right Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit
    • (The last digit often indicates a circuit malfunction, performance issue, or intermittent fault.)
  2. ABS Module Failure: Less common, but the ABS control module itself can fail. This is usually indicated by more complex or multiple fault codes that don't point to a specific sensor.
  3. Damaged Wiring: The wiring harness to a wheel speed sensor can get damaged by road debris, corrosion, or during other repairs.
  4. Brake Fluid Level Sensor: While you've checked the fluid, a faulty fluid level sensor in the reservoir could potentially trigger these lights, though it's less direct.
  5. Steering Angle Sensor: This sensor, part of the TCS system, can also cause these lights to appear if it's faulty or out of calibration.

When to See a Shop:

  • As soon as possible: While the car is driveable, you are without critical safety features (ABS, TCS). In an emergency braking situation or on slippery roads, this could be dangerous. A diagnostic scan is necessary to pinpoint the exact issue.

Steps for Diagnosis:

  1. OBD-II Scanner: You'll need an OBD-II scanner capable of reading ABS/TCS specific codes (not just generic powertrain codes). Many auto parts stores offer free code reading services. This is the most crucial step to identify which sensor or circuit is at fault.
  2. Visual Inspection: Once you have a code pointing to a specific wheel, visually inspect the wheel speed sensor and its wiring at that wheel for any obvious damage, dirt, or disconnections.
  3. Sensor Cleaning: Sometimes, excessive brake dust or debris on the sensor or tone ring can interfere with its reading. Cleaning it can sometimes resolve the issue.

Do not ignore these warning lights. Get the codes read and address the underlying problem to restore your Q60's full safety functionality.
