Vehicle: 2022 Infiniti Q60 RED SPORT 400

Hey everyone,

I'm experiencing an annoying vibration in the steering wheel of my 2022 Infiniti Q60 RED SPORT 400. It's most noticeable when I'm driving on the highway, especially once I hit around 60-70 MPH. The car has about 25,000 miles on it.

The vibration isn't constant, but it's definitely there and makes long drives less comfortable. It doesn't seem to be related to braking, as it happens even when I'm just cruising.

Could this be a wheel balance issue, or something more serious like an alignment problem or even warped rotors (though it doesn't happen during braking)? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Steering wheel vibration at highway speeds is a common issue with several potential causes. Given your description, it's likely related to your wheels, tires, or alignment. Here's what could be going on:

  1. Most Common Causes:

    • Wheel Imbalance: This is the most frequent culprit. If a wheel or tire is out of balance, it will cause vibration, typically felt in the steering wheel, and often more pronounced at specific highway speeds (e.g., 60-75 MPH). Losing a wheel weight is a common reason.
    • Tire Issues:
      • Uneven Tire Wear: Cupping, feathering, or flat spots can cause vibrations.
      • Damaged Tire: A bulge, separation, or internal damage to a tire can lead to vibration.
      • Out-of-Round Tire: Sometimes a tire isn't perfectly round, which can cause vibration.
    • Wheel Damage: A bent or damaged wheel (even a minor bend from a pothole) can cause vibration.
    • Alignment Issues: While less likely to cause a pure vibration without pulling, a severe alignment problem can sometimes contribute.
  2. Less Common Causes (but still possible):

    • Worn Suspension Components: Worn tie rod ends, ball joints, or wheel bearings can introduce play and lead to vibration, though often accompanied by other symptoms like clunking or loose steering.
    • Driveshaft/Axle Issues: If a driveshaft or CV axle is bent or out of balance, it can cause vibration, often felt throughout the vehicle, not just the steering wheel.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • Promptly: While not an immediate emergency, persistent vibration can be uncomfortable and, over time, can accelerate wear on other suspension and steering components. It's best to get this checked out soon.
    • You should take your Infiniti Q60 to a reputable tire shop or mechanic. They will typically:
      • Inspect your tires for damage and wear patterns.
      • Check wheel balance and rebalance all four wheels if necessary.
      • Inspect your wheels for any bends or damage.
      • Perform a suspension inspection to rule out worn components.
      • If the issue persists, a full wheel alignment might be recommended after ensuring wheels and tires are balanced and true.
