Vehicle: 2016 Infiniti Q70 3.7 Premium

Hi everyone,

I've got a 2016 Infiniti Q70 3.7 with about 85,000 miles, and recently I've started smelling exhaust fumes inside the cabin, especially when the car is idling or when I first start driving. It's a pretty strong smell, and it makes me worried about carbon monoxide. It seems to get a bit better once I'm up to speed, but it's definitely present.

There are no strange noises from the exhaust, and no check engine light. I've checked under the hood for anything obvious but didn't see anything. Has anyone else with a Q70 experienced this? What should I be looking for, or where could the leak be coming from?

Thanks for your help!

Smelling exhaust fumes inside the cabin of your 2016 Infiniti Q70 3.7 is a serious safety concern due to the risk of carbon monoxide exposure. This needs to be addressed immediately. The fact that it's more noticeable at idle suggests a leak that's allowing fumes to enter the ventilation system when the car is stationary or moving slowly.

  1. Potential Causes:

    • Exhaust Manifold Leak: Cracks in the exhaust manifold or a failed manifold gasket are very common points for exhaust leaks, especially on older vehicles. Fumes can then seep into the engine bay and be drawn into the cabin through the HVAC system.
    • Flex Pipe Leak: Many exhaust systems have a flexible pipe section to absorb engine vibrations. These can crack or develop holes over time, leading to leaks.
    • Downpipe/Catalytic Converter Gasket Leak: Gaskets connecting the exhaust manifold to the downpipe or catalytic converter can fail.
    • Loose Exhaust Connections: Any loose clamps or connections in the exhaust system could allow fumes to escape.
    • Cracked Exhaust Pipe: While less common for the smell to be so strong without noise, a crack in an exhaust pipe could also be the culprit.
  2. When to See a Shop:

    • Immediately. Do not delay. Carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless, and exposure can be fatal.
    • Have your Q70 inspected by a professional mechanic without delay. They will be able to safely lift the vehicle, inspect the entire exhaust system (from the manifold back), and often use a smoke machine to pinpoint the exact location of the leak.
    • Driving with an exhaust leak into the cabin is dangerous. Ensure your vehicle's ventilation system is set to recirculate air, and keep windows open if you must drive it to the shop.
