Vehicle: 2020 Infiniti QX50 Essential

Hello everyone,

I'm getting a 'ProPILOT Assist Malfunction' warning on my 2020 Infiniti QX50 Essential. This started happening intermittently a few weeks ago, but now it's almost constant. When the warning is on, features like adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist are unavailable.

I've tried cleaning the radar sensor in the front bumper and the camera on the windshield, but it hasn't made a difference. There are no obvious dents or damage to the car. Is this a common issue with these systems, and what could be causing it? I rely on these features quite a bit for my commute.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The ProPILOT Assist system in your 2020 Infiniti QX50 relies on a complex array of sensors, cameras, and radar units working in conjunction with the vehicle's control modules. A 'Malfunction' warning indicates that one or more of these components are not communicating correctly or are providing faulty data.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Ensure Sensors are Clear: While you've cleaned them, double-check that the front radar sensor (behind the Infiniti emblem), the windshield camera (behind the rearview mirror), and any side radar sensors (often in the rear bumper corners) are absolutely free of dirt, ice, snow, or obstructions. Even a small bug can interfere.
  2. Check for Windshield Damage: Cracks or chips in the windshield, especially in the camera's field of view, can impair its function. Aftermarket windshield replacements that are not properly calibrated can also cause issues.
  3. Battery Health: A weak or failing 12V battery can sometimes cause seemingly unrelated electronic system malfunctions due to insufficient voltage. Have your battery tested.
  4. System Reset (Temporary): Sometimes turning the car off, locking it, waiting a few minutes, and restarting can temporarily clear a glitch. If it returns, it's a persistent issue.

Common Causes for ProPILOT Assist Malfunction:

  • Sensor/Camera Obstruction: The most common and easiest to fix (dirt, ice, etc.).
  • Sensor Misalignment/Damage: Even a minor bump or impact can knock a radar sensor out of alignment, requiring recalibration. The camera can also be misaligned.
  • Faulty Radar Unit or Camera: The hardware itself can fail internally.
  • Wiring Harness Issues: Damaged or corroded wiring to any of the ADAS (Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems) components.
  • Control Module Failure: The central ADAS control module or a related Body Control Module (BCM) could be faulty.
  • Software Glitch: Less common for persistent issues, but software bugs can occur.

When to See a Shop:

Given that cleaning the sensors hasn't resolved the issue and the warning is persistent, it's crucial to have your QX50 inspected by an Infiniti dealership or a specialized shop. These systems require specific diagnostic tools to read codes from the ADAS modules and perform necessary recalibrations. If a sensor or camera needs replacement, it almost always requires a precise calibration procedure to ensure the system functions safely and correctly. Driving with a malfunctioning ProPILOT Assist means you lose critical safety and convenience features, and it's best to address it promptly.
