Vehicle: 2020 Infiniti QX50 Essential

Hello Infiniti owners,

I'm having an annoying issue with the parking sensors on my 2020 Infiniti QX50 Essential. Lately, they've been acting up, beeping randomly even when there's nothing close to the car. Sometimes they just go completely silent and don't detect obstacles at all, which is a safety concern.

It seems to happen more often in wet weather, but not exclusively. I've tried cleaning the sensors on the bumper, but that hasn't helped. Has anyone else experienced this with their QX50 or other Infiniti models? What was the solution?

Thanks for your input!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Malfunctioning parking sensors can be frustrating and compromise safety. Here are the common reasons for erratic behavior or failure in your 2020 QX50:

  1. Dirt and Debris: Even after cleaning, stubborn dirt, ice, or snow can interfere with the ultrasonic waves the sensors emit. Ensure they are completely clear and dry.
  2. Moisture Ingress: As you noted, wet weather can exacerbate the issue. Water can get into the sensor housing or wiring connectors, causing short circuits or corrosion. This is a common cause for intermittent operation.
  3. Damaged Sensor: A minor bump or impact to the bumper can damage an individual sensor, causing it to malfunction. Visually inspect each sensor for cracks or physical damage.
  4. Wiring Issues: Frayed wires, loose connections, or corrosion in the wiring harness leading to the sensors can disrupt their signal. This often requires a more thorough inspection, potentially involving bumper removal.
  5. Control Module Fault: Less common, but a fault in the parking assist control module itself could lead to incorrect readings or system failure.
  6. Aftermarket Accessories: If you have any aftermarket bumper guards or accessories, ensure they are not obstructing the sensors.

When to See a Shop:

  • If cleaning the sensors doesn't resolve the issue.
  • If you suspect physical damage to a sensor or wiring.
  • If the problem is persistent and affects multiple sensors, indicating a potential control module or widespread wiring issue.
  • A professional can use diagnostic tools to identify which specific sensor is faulty or if there's a communication error with the control module. While there aren't generic OBD-II codes for individual parking sensors, Infiniti's proprietary diagnostic equipment can often pinpoint the exact sensor or module fault.
