Vehicle: 2021 Infiniti QX50 Essential

Hello everyone,

I'm experiencing a noticeable engine vibration on my 2021 Infiniti QX50 Essential, which has about 30,000 miles. It's most prominent when the car is idling, especially in drive at a stoplight. It's not a violent shake, but it's enough to feel through the steering wheel and seat, and it wasn't there when the car was new. The car has the VC-Turbo engine.

There are no warning lights on the dash, and the car drives fine once I'm moving. I'm wondering if this is a known issue with the VC-Turbo engine or if it could be something like engine mounts. Any thoughts or similar experiences?

Thanks for your insights!

Engine vibration at idle on your 2021 Infiniti QX50 with the VC-Turbo engine can be a concern, especially if it's a new development. While the VC-Turbo is a complex engine, a noticeable vibration suggests something is out of the ordinary. Here are potential causes and steps to take:

  1. Potential Causes:

    • Engine Mounts: Worn or failing engine mounts are a very common cause of increased vibration, particularly at idle. They are designed to isolate engine vibrations from the chassis.
    • Fuel Quality/Injectors: Poor fuel quality or slightly clogged fuel injectors can cause minor misfires or an uneven burn, leading to subtle vibrations. Try using premium fuel and a high-quality fuel system cleaner.
    • Spark Plugs: Though less likely at 30,000 miles, a faulty spark plug could cause an imbalance.
    • VC-Turbo System Actuator/Sensors: The variable compression system itself relies on precise actuators and sensors. A minor glitch in this system could potentially cause an uneven engine operation, though this would often trigger a fault code.
    • Accessory Drive Components: Issues with components like the alternator, power steering pump (if applicable), or AC compressor (and their belts/pulleys) can sometimes transmit vibrations.
  2. When to See a Shop:

    • If the vibration worsens or becomes accompanied by a check engine light.
    • If you're unable to identify or resolve the issue with basic checks (like fuel quality).
    • An Infiniti technician can perform a comprehensive diagnostic, including:
      • Inspecting engine mounts for wear or damage.
      • Checking for any pending or stored diagnostic codes related to the engine or VC-Turbo system.
      • Monitoring engine parameters (like misfire counts) to pinpoint any cylinder-specific issues.
      • Evaluating the overall health of the VC-Turbo system and its components.
