Vehicle: 2021 Infiniti QX50 Essential

Hi everyone,

I've got a 2021 Infiniti QX50 Essential with the VC-Turbo engine, and I've noticed it seems to be consuming a fair amount of oil between oil changes. I'm having to add a quart or so every 3,000-4,000 miles, which seems excessive for a relatively new engine. There are no visible leaks or smoke from the exhaust.

Is this normal for the VC-Turbo engine, given its unique design, or should I be concerned? Has anyone else with a 2021+ QX50 experienced similar oil consumption? What could be the potential causes, and are there any TSBs related to this? Thanks for your input!

Oil consumption in modern engines, especially those with advanced technologies like Infiniti's VC-Turbo, can be a complex issue. While some level of oil consumption is considered normal, adding a quart every 3,000-4,000 miles in a 2021 QX50 might warrant further investigation.

  1. Establish a Baseline: Start by meticulously tracking your oil consumption. Note the mileage, amount added, and driving conditions. This data will be crucial for diagnosis.
  2. Check for External Leaks: Even if you don't see drips, check for subtle oil residue around the engine, turbocharger, and exhaust manifold. Sometimes leaks are minor and burn off before hitting the ground.
  3. Monitor Exhaust for Blue Smoke: While you mentioned no smoke, pay close attention during cold starts or heavy acceleration. Blue smoke indicates oil burning.
  4. Ensure Proper Oil Type and Viscosity: Always use the exact oil type and viscosity recommended in your owner's manual. Incorrect oil can lead to increased consumption.
  5. PCV System Inspection: A clogged or faulty Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve can lead to increased crankcase pressure, forcing oil past seals and piston rings.

Common Causes (VC-Turbo Specific & General):

  • VC-Turbo Design: The variable compression mechanism involves more moving parts and seals, which could theoretically lead to slightly higher consumption than a conventional engine, but a quart every 3-4k miles is on the higher end of 'normal' for a new engine.
  • Turbocharger Seals: Worn or failing turbocharger seals can allow oil to enter the intake or exhaust system and burn off.
  • Piston Rings/Cylinder Walls: While less likely in a newer engine, issues with piston rings or cylinder wall wear can lead to oil bypassing into the combustion chamber.
  • Valve Stem Seals: Worn valve stem seals can allow oil to seep into the combustion chamber, especially during deceleration.
  • Infiniti TSBs: Infiniti has issued TSBs for various engine-related concerns, including some related to oil consumption or engine noise. Your dealer can check for applicable TSBs for your specific VIN.

When to See a Shop: If your oil consumption continues at this rate or increases, or if you notice any performance issues, warning lights, or unusual engine noises, schedule an appointment with an authorized Infiniti service center. They can perform an official oil consumption test, which involves sealing the engine and monitoring oil levels over a set mileage. They can also perform a compression test, inspect the PCV system, and check for any diagnostic trouble codes (e.g., P0171/P0174 for lean conditions that could be related to vacuum leaks from PCV issues, or P030X for misfires if oil is fouling spark plugs) to accurately diagnose the root cause of the oil consumption.
