Vehicle: 2022 Infiniti QX50 Essential

Hey everyone,

My 2022 Infiniti QX50 Essential, which has about 35,000 miles on it, has started making some concerning noises. When I brake, especially at moderate to higher speeds, I hear a distinct squealing sound. On top of that, I'm feeling a vibration through the pedal and steering wheel.

Is this a clear sign that I need new brake pads and rotors? Or could it be something else? I'm trying to figure out if this is a DIY job or if I should just take it to the dealership.

Squealing and vibration during braking on your 2022 Infiniti QX50 are classic symptoms that point towards brake system issues. At 35,000 miles, it's a very common time for brake components to require attention.

  1. Common Causes:
    • Worn Brake Pads: The squealing is often caused by the wear indicator on your brake pads, which is a small metal tab designed to make noise when the pads are low. If the pads are severely worn, you might also hear a grinding sound.
    • Warped Rotors: Vibration through the pedal and steering wheel, especially at speed, is a strong indicator of warped brake rotors. Rotors can warp due to excessive heat or uneven cooling, causing an uneven surface that the pads grab onto.
    • Sticky Calipers: Less common, but a caliper that isn't releasing properly can cause uneven pad wear, squealing, and sometimes vibration.
  2. Inspection Steps (DIY):
    • Visual Check: With the wheel removed, inspect the thickness of your brake pads. If they are less than 3-4mm thick, they need replacement. Look at the rotor surface for any grooves, scoring, or uneven wear.
    • Rotor Runout: While harder to measure without a dial indicator, you can often visually see if a rotor appears uneven or discolored.
  3. DIY vs. Shop:
    • Replacing brake pads and rotors is a common DIY task for those with mechanical experience and the right tools (jack, jack stands, lug wrench, caliper compressor, torque wrench). Ensure you use quality replacement parts specific to your QX50.
    • If you're unsure, lack the tools, or suspect more complex issues (like a sticky caliper or brake fluid problems), it's best to take it to a qualified mechanic. Brake system integrity is crucial for safety.
  4. Additional Checks: While servicing the brakes, it's a good idea to check your brake fluid level and condition. If it's low or very dark, it might need to be topped off or flushed. Also, ensure all caliper slide pins move freely.
