Vehicle: 2022 Infiniti QX50 Essential

My 2022 Infiniti QX50 Essential, with about 30,000 miles, has recently started having a very rough idle. It feels like the engine is shaking, and sometimes it even stalls when I'm at a stoplight. The check engine light is on and blinking occasionally.

I scanned it and got a P0301 code, which is a Cylinder 1 Misfire. I'm worried about potential engine damage. Is this a common issue with the variable compression engine (VC-Turbo) in the QX50?

What should I be looking at first? Plugs, coils, or something more serious with this engine? Any advice from other QX50 owners would be great.

A P0301 code on your 2022 Infiniti QX50 indicates a misfire specifically in Cylinder 1. A blinking check engine light is a critical warning, signifying a severe misfire that could be damaging your catalytic converter due to unburnt fuel entering the exhaust. You should address this issue promptly.

The VC-Turbo engine in the QX50 is complex, but the causes of a misfire generally fall into three categories:

  1. Ignition System:
    • Spark Plug: A worn, fouled, or damaged spark plug in Cylinder 1 is a very common cause. Given your mileage, it's a good starting point. Infiniti recommends specific spark plugs for the VC-Turbo; ensure any replacements are correct.
    • Ignition Coil: The ignition coil for Cylinder 1 could be failing. A common diagnostic step is to swap the coil from Cylinder 1 with one from a known good cylinder (e.g., Cylinder 2 or 3). If the misfire code then moves to the new cylinder (e.g., P0302), you've identified a faulty coil.
  2. Fuel System:
    • Fuel Injector: A clogged, dirty, or faulty fuel injector for Cylinder 1 could be failing to deliver enough fuel, or delivering it improperly. Fuel system cleaners can sometimes help with minor clogs, but a faulty injector will need replacement.
    • Fuel Pressure: While less likely to affect only one cylinder, low overall fuel pressure could contribute to misfires. This would usually trigger other codes.
  3. Engine Mechanical Issues:
    • Low Compression: This is a more serious concern. Issues like a worn piston ring, damaged valve, or a blown head gasket could lead to low compression in Cylinder 1. A compression test is required to diagnose this.
    • Vacuum Leak: A vacuum leak specifically affecting Cylinder 1's intake runner could cause a lean condition and misfire, though this is less common for a single cylinder unless there's a specific gasket failure.

Diagnosis Steps:

  • Start with the Easiest: Begin by inspecting and potentially swapping the ignition coil and spark plug for Cylinder 1. These are relatively straightforward and often resolve the issue.
  • Fuel Injector Check: If ignition components are ruled out, a mechanic can perform tests on the fuel injector, including resistance checks and flow tests.

When to See a Shop: If swapping the coil and spark plug doesn't resolve the P0301 code, or if the blinking check engine light persists, it's crucial to take your QX50 to an Infiniti dealership or a specialized shop immediately. They have the advanced diagnostic equipment to perform compression tests, fuel system diagnostics, and deeper analysis of the VC-Turbo engine's complex systems to accurately pinpoint and repair the root cause before further damage occurs.
