Vehicle: 2022 Infiniti QX50 Sensory

Hi everyone,

My 2022 Infiniti QX50 Sensory is having a major issue this morning. It cranks strongly, but it just won't start. It sounds like it's trying, but there's no ignition, no firing up at all.

The battery seems fine because it's cranking so well. I can hear the fuel pump prime when I open the driver's door, so I think that's working. I haven't had any recent work done on the car, and it was running perfectly yesterday. I've tried both key fobs, just in case.

What could be preventing it from starting? Is there anything simple I can check before calling for a tow?

Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A 'crank, no start' condition on your 2022 Infiniti QX50 indicates that the engine is turning over, but it's not igniting the fuel-air mixture. This typically points to an issue with one of the three main components required for combustion: fuel, spark, or air (compression).

Here's a breakdown of common causes and initial checks:

  1. Fuel Delivery Issues: While you hear the fuel pump prime, it doesn't guarantee proper fuel pressure or delivery. A clogged fuel filter (less common on newer vehicles), a faulty fuel pressure regulator, or even a stuck fuel injector could be the culprit. You'd need a fuel pressure gauge to confirm this.
  2. Ignition System Failure: Even with strong cranking, if there's no spark, the engine won't start. This could be due to:
    • Faulty Crankshaft Position Sensor: This sensor tells the engine computer when to fire the spark plugs and injectors. If it fails, the computer doesn't know when to initiate spark.
    • Faulty Camshaft Position Sensor: Similar to the crankshaft sensor, this is crucial for timing.
    • Ignition Coils/Spark Plugs: While less likely for all to fail simultaneously, a widespread issue could prevent starting.
  3. Immobilizer System: If the car's anti-theft system (immobilizer) isn't recognizing your key fob, it will prevent the engine from starting, even if it cranks. Look for a security light flashing on the dashboard while trying to start.
  4. Engine Control Module (ECM) Malfunction: A rare but possible cause is a faulty ECM that isn't sending the correct signals for fuel and spark.

When to see a shop:

Since your QX50 is cranking strongly and you've checked the basic battery and fuel pump prime, the issue is likely more complex. Without specialized tools to check for spark, fuel pressure, or diagnostic codes (even if the CEL isn't on, pending codes might exist), it's best to have your vehicle towed to an Infiniti dealership or a qualified mechanic. They can perform a comprehensive diagnostic scan and pinpoint the exact component failure.
