Vehicle: 2019 Infiniti QX50 ESSENTIAL

Hello forum,

I'm having an issue with my 2019 Infiniti QX50 ESSENTIAL. Both the ABS warning light and the Traction Control (VDC) warning light have come on simultaneously on my dashboard. This happened a couple of days ago and they've stayed on since.

The car seems to be driving fine, and I haven't noticed any immediate changes in braking or handling, but obviously, these lights being on is concerning. I've tried turning the car off and on again, but they remain illuminated.

Has anyone experienced this with their QX50 or another Infiniti model? What could be causing both of these lights to trigger at the same time? Is it safe to drive like this?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

When both your ABS and Traction Control (VDC - Vehicle Dynamic Control) lights illuminate simultaneously, it almost always indicates a problem within the anti-lock braking system, as the VDC system relies heavily on ABS sensor data. While your car might seem to drive normally, these critical safety features are likely disabled.

  1. Common Causes:

    • Wheel Speed Sensor Failure: This is the most common cause. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If one fails (due to damage, dirt, or electrical fault), the ABS/VDC system loses crucial data, triggering the lights.
    • Damaged ABS Reluctor Ring: This is a toothed ring (sometimes called a tone ring) that the wheel speed sensor reads. If it's cracked, bent, or corroded, the sensor can't get an accurate reading.
    • Low Brake Fluid: While less common for simultaneous ABS/VDC lights, extremely low brake fluid can sometimes trigger brake-related warnings.
    • ABS Module Failure: The ABS control module is the 'brain' of the system. If it fails, it can cause various warning lights. This is a more expensive repair.
    • Wiring Issues: A damaged wire or poor connection to a wheel speed sensor or the ABS module can also cause these lights to come on.
    • Blown Fuse: A fuse related to the ABS system could be blown.
  2. OBD-II Codes to Look For:

    • A common range of codes related to wheel speed sensors are C0031-C0050 (specific to each wheel).
    • Other codes like C1101 (ABS hydraulic circuit) or C1103 (ABS pump motor) could indicate module issues.
  3. Safety and When to See a Shop:

    • Safety: While your regular brakes will still function, your ABS and VDC systems are disabled. This means that in an emergency braking situation, your wheels could lock up, and your vehicle won't automatically correct for skids. This significantly increases your risk, especially in adverse weather conditions.
    • Immediately: You should have your 2019 Infiniti QX50 diagnosed by a professional mechanic as soon as possible. They will connect a specialized diagnostic scanner (not just a basic OBD-II reader, as ABS codes are often manufacturer-specific) to retrieve the specific fault codes from the ABS control module. This will pinpoint the exact component that has failed, allowing for an accurate and efficient repair.
