Vehicle: 2022 Infiniti QX50 Essential

Hello everyone,

My 2022 Infiniti QX50 Essential just threw a couple of warning lights on the dash: the ABS light and the Traction Control light are both illuminated. I scanned it with my OBD-II reader, and it's showing a C1103 code.

The car drives normally, no weird braking feel or anything, but those lights are definitely concerning. It has about 30,000 miles on it. I haven't hit any major potholes recently or done anything unusual.

What does a C1103 code typically mean for an Infiniti, and is this something I can check myself before taking it to the dealership? Thanks for the help!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The C1103 diagnostic trouble code (DTC) in an Infiniti, especially when accompanied by illuminated ABS and Traction Control lights, typically points to an issue with the Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor circuit. These sensors are crucial for the ABS and Traction Control systems to function correctly, as they monitor the rotational speed of each wheel.

Common Causes for DTC C1103:

  • Faulty Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor: The sensor itself can fail internally.
  • Damaged Wheel Speed Sensor Wiring/Connector: The wiring harness leading to the sensor can get damaged (frayed, cut), or the connector can become corroded or loose.
  • Contaminated Sensor or Tone Ring: Debris (dirt, rust, metal shavings) on the sensor tip or the magnetic tone ring (which the sensor reads) can interfere with its signal.
  • Damaged Tone Ring: The tone ring (also known as an ABS ring or reluctor ring) can become cracked or damaged, leading to an inconsistent signal.
  • Wheel Bearing Play: Excessive play in the wheel bearing can cause the tone ring to wobble, affecting the sensor's reading.

Troubleshooting Steps (for the DIYer):

  1. Visual Inspection: Safely lift and support the front right side of your QX50. Remove the wheel. Visually inspect the wheel speed sensor and its wiring harness. Look for any obvious signs of damage, cuts, fraying, or corrosion on the connector.
  2. Clean the Sensor and Tone Ring: Carefully remove the sensor (usually held by one bolt) and clean its tip. Also, inspect and clean the tone ring (often visible through the sensor's mounting hole or on the axle shaft/hub assembly) for any debris or damage.
  3. Check Wiring Continuity: If you have a multimeter, you can check the continuity of the sensor's wiring harness back to the ABS module, though this can be complex without a wiring diagram.

When to See a Shop:

  • If Lights Persist: After visual inspection and cleaning, if the lights remain on or return shortly after clearing the code.
  • For Advanced Diagnostics: A professional shop or dealership has specialized scan tools that can read live data from each wheel speed sensor, allowing them to pinpoint if the sensor is truly faulty or if there's an intermittent signal issue. They can also perform more thorough wiring checks.
  • If You Suspect Internal Damage: If the tone ring is damaged or if there's significant wheel bearing play, these repairs require specialized tools and expertise. Driving with a malfunctioning ABS/Traction Control system can compromise safety, especially in adverse conditions, so prompt repair is recommended.
