Vehicle: 2022 Infiniti QX50 Sensory

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2022 Infiniti QX50 Sensory with about 30,000 miles on it. Lately, I've noticed a bit of a musty smell coming from the AC vents, especially when I first turn it on. Also, the airflow doesn't seem as strong as it used to be, even on high settings.

Could this be related to the cabin air filter? And while I'm thinking about filters, what about the engine air filter? What's the typical replacement schedule for both on a 2022 Infiniti QX50? Is this something I can easily do myself?

You're on the right track! The symptoms you're describing – musty AC smell and reduced airflow – are classic indicators that your cabin air filter needs attention. It's also a good time to consider your engine air filter.

  1. Cabin Air Filter:
    • Cause: The musty smell is often caused by mold and mildew buildup on the evaporator core and within the cabin air filter itself, which traps dust, pollen, and other airborne particles. Reduced airflow is a direct result of a clogged filter.
    • Interval: For your 2022 Infiniti QX50, the cabin air filter should typically be replaced every 15,000 to 30,000 miles, or once a year, whichever comes first. Given your 30,000 miles, it's definitely due.
    • DIY: Replacing the cabin air filter is usually a straightforward DIY task. It's often located behind the glove compartment. You can find many tutorials online specific to the Infiniti QX50.
  2. Engine Air Filter:
    • Purpose: The engine air filter protects your engine from contaminants and ensures proper air intake for combustion.
    • Interval: The engine air filter typically needs replacement every 30,000 miles or every 2-3 years, though this can vary based on driving conditions (e.g., dusty environments require more frequent changes). At 30,000 miles, it's a good idea to inspect or replace it.
    • DIY: This is also a relatively easy DIY job, usually involving opening the air filter box under the hood, removing the old filter, and dropping in a new one.
  3. Where to Buy: You can purchase both cabin and engine air filters from your Infiniti dealership, automotive parts stores, or reputable online retailers. Ensure you get the correct part numbers for your 2022 QX50.
  4. Beyond Filters: If the musty smell persists after changing the cabin filter, you might consider an AC system cleaning spray designed to eliminate mold and mildew from the evaporator core. This is often available at auto parts stores.
