Vehicle: 2022 Infiniti QX50 Essential

My 2022 Infiniti QX50 Essential, with about 25,000 miles, seems to be consuming a lot of oil between changes. I had the oil changed about 3,000 miles ago, and the dipstick is already showing it's significantly low, almost a quart down. I haven't noticed any leaks on my driveway, and there's no visible smoke from the exhaust.

I know the VC-Turbo engine is pretty advanced, but this level of oil consumption seems unusual for a relatively new car. Is this normal for the VC-Turbo engine, or should I be concerned? What could be causing this, and what steps should I take?

Excessive oil consumption in a relatively new 2022 Infiniti QX50 with the VC-Turbo engine at 25,000 miles is definitely a concern and not considered normal. While some engines consume a small amount of oil, a quart in 3,000 miles without visible leaks or smoke suggests an internal issue.

  1. PCV Valve System: A faulty or clogged Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve or its associated hoses can lead to increased oil consumption. If the PCV system isn't functioning correctly, it can draw excessive oil vapor into the intake manifold, where it's burned off.
  2. Turbocharger Seals: The VC-Turbo engine utilizes a turbocharger, and if the seals within the turbo unit begin to fail, oil can leak into either the exhaust or intake side and be burned. This might not always produce visible smoke, especially if the leak is minor.
  3. Piston Rings/Cylinder Walls: Although less common in such a new engine, issues with piston rings or cylinder wall wear can lead to oil bypassing the rings and entering the combustion chamber. This is a more serious internal engine problem.
  4. Valve Stem Seals: Worn valve stem seals can allow oil to seep past the valves and into the combustion chamber, particularly noticeable after idling or during engine braking.
  5. Oil Type and Viscosity: Ensure the correct oil type and viscosity specified by Infiniti for the VC-Turbo engine is always used. Incorrect oil can sometimes contribute to consumption.

When to See a Shop: You should schedule an appointment with an Infiniti dealership or a trusted mechanic immediately. They will likely perform an oil consumption test, which involves topping off the oil, sealing the dipstick, and having you return after a set mileage to measure consumption accurately. This is often the first step in diagnosing and addressing the issue under warranty if applicable.
