Vehicle: 2022 Infiniti QX50 Sensory

Hey team, I'm pretty frustrated right now. I hit a really nasty pothole with my 2022 Infiniti QX50 Sensory (only 25,000 miles) a couple of days ago, and ever since, the car pulls noticeably to the right. It wasn't doing this before, and it's quite annoying to constantly correct the steering.

I visually inspected the tire and rim on the front right, and they look okay, no obvious damage or air loss. The steering wheel is also slightly off-center when driving straight.

Could this be an alignment issue, or something more serious like a bent suspension component? What should I be looking for? Any advice on getting this sorted out quickly would be great.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Hitting a significant pothole can cause immediate and noticeable damage to your vehicle's suspension and steering components, especially on a relatively new car like your 2022 Infiniti QX50 Sensory. The pulling to the right and off-center steering wheel are clear indicators of an issue that needs prompt attention.

Common Causes of Pulling After a Pothole:

  1. Wheel Alignment Issues: This is the most common result. The impact can knock the front suspension geometry out of specification, affecting camber, caster, or toe. Even if no parts are bent, the angles can be off.
  2. Bent Suspension Components: The force of a pothole can bend or damage various parts, including:
    • Control Arm: The lower or upper control arm could be bent or have damaged bushings.
    • Tie Rod (Inner or Outer): A bent tie rod or a damaged tie rod end can directly affect steering and alignment.
    • Strut/Shock Absorber: The strut itself could be bent, or its mounting points could be damaged.
    • Steering Knuckle: Less common, but a severe impact can damage the steering knuckle.
  3. Damaged Wheel Bearing: A hard impact can sometimes damage a wheel bearing, leading to excessive play that affects alignment and causes pulling.
  4. Tire Damage: While you visually inspected the tire, internal damage (like a broken belt) that isn't immediately visible could still cause a pull. Also, uneven tire pressure can cause pulling, so double-check the pressure on all four tires.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately: Driving with a significant pull can cause premature and uneven tire wear, put undue stress on other suspension components, and most importantly, compromise your vehicle's handling and safety. It's crucial to have this inspected by a professional as soon as possible.

Steps for Diagnosis & Repair:

  1. Comprehensive Suspension Inspection: A qualified technician will lift your QX50 and thoroughly inspect all front suspension and steering components for any signs of bending, cracks, loose fasteners, or damaged bushings/ball joints.
  2. Wheel Alignment Check: Even if no parts appear visibly bent, an alignment machine will accurately measure all angles (toe, camber, caster) to determine if they are within factory specifications. If parts are bent, they must be replaced before a proper alignment can be performed.
  3. Tire Inspection: The technician will also check the tires for any hidden damage or irregular wear patterns.

Addressing this quickly will prevent further damage and ensure your QX50 drives safely and efficiently.
