Vehicle: 2021 Infiniti QX50 ESSENTIAL

Hi all,

I'm having some intermittent issues with the ProPILOT Assist system in my 2021 Infiniti QX50. Specifically, I'm getting 'Front Radar Sensor Malfunction' warnings, and sometimes the system just disengages without warning, even in clear weather. The adaptive cruise control and lane keeping features become unavailable.

I've tried cleaning the front emblem and the area around the radar sensor, but the problem keeps coming back. It's really frustrating because I rely on these features for highway driving. Is this a common problem for the QX50? Could it be a faulty sensor, or is it more likely a software glitch? Any advice on what to check or what to tell the dealer?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Intermittent 'Front Radar Sensor Malfunction' warnings and ProPILOT Assist disengagement on your 2021 Infiniti QX50 point to a problem within the Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS). These systems are highly complex and rely on precise sensor readings. While cleaning the sensor area is a good first step, persistent issues often indicate a deeper problem.

Here are the most common causes:

  1. Faulty Radar Sensor: The front radar sensor, typically located behind the Infiniti emblem or in the lower grille, can fail internally. This could be due to manufacturing defects, impact damage (even minor), or environmental exposure.
  2. Sensor Misalignment/Calibration: Even a slight bump or vibration can knock the radar sensor out of alignment. If the sensor isn't perfectly aimed, it will struggle to get accurate readings, leading to malfunctions. Calibration is a specialized procedure requiring dealership tools.
  3. Wiring/Connector Issues: Damaged wiring or a loose/corroded connector to the radar sensor or its control module can interrupt communication, causing errors.
  4. Software Glitches: Less common for persistent hardware-like errors, but software bugs in the ADAS control module can sometimes cause erroneous warnings or system disengagement. A software update might be available.

Diagnostic Codes: A professional scan will likely reveal specific ADAS-related codes, such as:

  • C1A00: Front Radar Sensor Malfunction
  • U0401: Invalid Data Received from ECM/PCM (if communication issues)
  • C1A01: Front Radar Sensor Blocked (though you've cleaned it, this can sometimes appear with internal faults)

When to See a Shop:

It is highly recommended to take your QX50 to an authorized Infiniti dealership immediately. ADAS systems are critical for safety, and their malfunction can compromise your driving experience and potentially safety features. They have the specialized diagnostic equipment (CONSULT-III Plus) to accurately pinpoint the fault, whether it's a sensor replacement, wiring repair, or a necessary sensor recalibration. Do not attempt to recalibrate or replace these sensors yourself, as it requires precise measurements and specialized tools to ensure proper functionality and safety.
