Vehicle: 2017 Infiniti QX60 AWD

Hi all,

I'm experiencing some concerning issues with my 2017 Infiniti QX60 AWD, which has about 80,000 miles on it. Lately, the transmission has developed a noticeable shudder, especially when accelerating from a stop or at lower speeds. It feels like the car is struggling to find the right gear, or like something is slipping.

In addition to the shudder, I've started hearing a distinct whining noise that seems to come from the transmission area, particularly when the car is warm. It's not constant, but it's definitely there during acceleration.

I'm worried this might be a sign of a failing CVT. Has anyone with a QX60 had similar problems? What was the diagnosis, and what was the fix? I'm trying to prepare myself for what could be a costly repair.

The symptoms you're describing—transmission shudder, slipping sensation, and a whining noise—are unfortunately common indicators of potential issues with the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) in your 2017 Infiniti QX60. Infiniti's CVTs, particularly in earlier models within your specified range, can be prone to wear and tear that manifests in these ways.

Here are the most likely causes:

  1. CVT Fluid Degradation/Low Level: Old or low transmission fluid can lead to poor lubrication and cooling, causing shuddering and increased wear. The fluid in CVTs is critical and requires specific types and regular changes.
  2. Worn Belt/Pulleys: The CVT operates with a steel belt and two variable-diameter pulleys. Over time, these components can wear, leading to slipping, shuddering, and the characteristic whining noise as they struggle to maintain proper contact and ratio.
  3. Torque Converter Issues: A failing torque converter can also cause shuddering, especially at specific speeds or during lock-up.
  4. Valve Body Malfunction: The valve body controls fluid pressure to the pulleys. If it's malfunctioning, it can lead to incorrect pressure, causing slipping and shuddering.
  5. Internal Bearing Wear: The whining noise often points to worn bearings within the transmission, which can be a precursor to more significant internal failure.

When to see a shop: It is critical to have your QX60 inspected by an Infiniti-certified technician or a reputable transmission specialist as soon as possible. Continuing to drive with these symptoms can lead to catastrophic transmission failure, which is a very expensive repair (often requiring a full transmission replacement). They will check for any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to the transmission (e.g., P07xx series codes), inspect fluid condition, and perform a road test to accurately diagnose the issue.
