Vehicle: 2018 Infiniti QX60 AWD

Hi all,

I own a 2018 Infiniti QX60 AWD with about 60,000 miles on it. Lately, I've noticed a significant hesitation and jerking sensation, especially when accelerating from a stop or at very low speeds (under 20 mph). It feels like the transmission is struggling to engage or is slipping.

I'm concerned this might be a common CVT issue. Has anyone else with a QX60 experienced this? Is there a TSB or recall related to the CVT for this model year? I'm trying to figure out if this is normal behavior or if I should be worried about a major transmission problem. Any insights would be helpful before I take it to the dealer.

Concerns about Continuous Variable Transmissions (CVTs) are common, and hesitation or jerking in a 2018 Infiniti QX60 at low speeds can indeed be a symptom of various issues, some minor and some more significant.

  1. Check Transmission Fluid Level and Condition: Low or degraded transmission fluid can cause erratic behavior. While CVTs are sealed units, a qualified technician can check the fluid level and condition. Contaminated or burnt fluid is a red flag.
  2. Software Update: Transmission control module (TCM) software updates are frequently released to improve shift logic and address drivability concerns. Your Infiniti dealer can check if your vehicle has the latest software.
  3. Throttle Body Cleaning/Reset: Sometimes, a dirty throttle body or an uncalibrated throttle position sensor can cause hesitation, mimicking a transmission issue. A professional cleaning and throttle body relearn procedure might help.
  4. Inspect Engine Mounts: Worn engine mounts can cause excessive movement and a 'jerking' sensation during acceleration or deceleration, which can be mistaken for a transmission problem.

Common Causes:

  • CVT Fluid Degradation: Over time, CVT fluid loses its lubricating properties, leading to increased friction and slippage.
  • TCM Software Glitches: Software can sometimes cause incorrect pressure or ratio adjustments.
  • Valve Body Issues: Internal components within the CVT's valve body can stick or wear, affecting fluid pressure and engagement.
  • Torque Converter Lock-up Issues: Problems with the torque converter engaging or disengaging can cause shuddering or hesitation.

When to See a Shop: If the hesitation and jerking are consistent, worsening, or accompanied by warning lights (e.g., 'Service Engine Soon' or 'AT Check'), it's crucial to have your QX60 inspected by an Infiniti specialist immediately. Early diagnosis can prevent more extensive and costly repairs. They can perform a diagnostic scan for transmission-related trouble codes (e.g., P0740, P0776, P0840) and conduct specific CVT diagnostic tests to determine the root cause, which could range from a fluid service to a transmission replacement.
