Vehicle: 2018 Infiniti QX60 Pure

Hi all,

My 2018 Infiniti QX60 with about 60,000 miles has recently started acting up. When I'm driving at low speeds, especially in stop-and-go traffic or pulling away from a stop, the transmission seems to hesitate and then sometimes jerks into gear. It's a CVT, and it just doesn't feel smooth like it used to. There's no check engine light on yet, but it's definitely noticeable.

I'm concerned about the CVT's longevity, as I've heard stories about these transmissions. Has anyone experienced something similar with their QX60? What could be causing this, and what should I be looking at?

Thanks!

Hesitation and jerking from a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) in your 2018 Infiniti QX60 is a symptom that warrants immediate attention. While CVTs are designed for smooth operation, they can develop issues. Here's what could be happening and what to do:

  1. Potential Causes:

    • Low or Contaminated CVT Fluid: This is a primary suspect. Low fluid levels or degraded/contaminated fluid can significantly impact CVT performance. The fluid provides hydraulic pressure for operation and lubrication.
    • CVT Software/Firmware Issues: Sometimes, a reflash or update to the transmission control module (TCM) software can resolve minor shift logic or hesitation problems.
    • Valve Body Malfunction: The valve body controls fluid flow within the transmission. If it's sticking or failing, it can cause erratic behavior.
    • Internal CVT Component Wear: Over time, internal components like the belt or pulleys can wear, leading to slipping, jerking, or loss of power.
    • Torque Converter Issues: A failing torque converter can also contribute to hesitation and shuddering.
  2. When to See a Shop:

    • Immediately. CVT issues tend to worsen over time and can lead to complete transmission failure if not addressed.
    • Have a qualified Infiniti technician inspect the CVT fluid level and condition. They will also check for any stored diagnostic trouble codes (even if the check engine light isn't on) and look for applicable software updates.
    • If fluid is good and software is current, further diagnosis (e.g., pressure tests, internal inspection) may be necessary. Ignoring these symptoms can lead to a costly transmission replacement.
