Vehicle: 2019 Infiniti QX60 Luxe

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing some concerning issues with the CVT in my 2019 Infiniti QX60 Luxe. Lately, especially at lower speeds or when accelerating from a stop, the transmission feels like it's jerking or slipping. The RPMs will sometimes flare up without a corresponding increase in speed, and then it'll catch with a jolt.

It's not constant, but it's happening more frequently and making me worried about the longevity of the transmission. I've heard about CVT issues in other vehicles, and I'm hoping this isn't a sign of a major problem. Has anyone with a 2016-2020 QX60 experienced similar symptoms?

Any insights or advice on what might be causing this, or what I should tell the dealership, would be really helpful. Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) issues like jerking, slipping, or RPM flares are unfortunately not uncommon across various manufacturers. For your 2019 Infiniti QX60, these symptoms warrant immediate attention.

Potential Causes & Steps:

  1. Low or Degraded CVT Fluid: The most common cause. CVT fluid is critical for proper operation and cooling. Over time, it can degrade, especially under heavy use or if not changed according to the manufacturer's schedule.
    • Action: Check the CVT fluid level and condition. If it's dark, smells burnt, or is low, a fluid and filter change might be necessary. Ensure only genuine Infiniti NS-3 CVT fluid is used.
  2. Software Glitch/Update: Sometimes, the transmission control module (TCM) software can have bugs or require updates to improve shifting logic and address known issues.
    • Action: A dealership can check for and apply any available TCM software updates.
  3. Valve Body Malfunction: The valve body directs fluid pressure within the CVT. If it's faulty, it can lead to inconsistent pressure and slipping.
  4. Internal CVT Component Wear: If the fluid is severely degraded or there's been excessive heat, internal components like the belt or pulleys can wear, leading to slipping and jerking.
  5. Torque Converter Issues: While less common in CVTs, a failing torque converter can also contribute to shuddering or slipping sensations.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately. CVT issues can quickly escalate. Continued driving with these symptoms can cause further, more severe damage, potentially leading to a complete transmission failure.
  • A qualified Infiniti technician can perform a diagnostic scan to check for any stored transmission codes (even if the Check Engine Light isn't on) and perform specific CVT diagnostic procedures. They can also assess the fluid condition and recommend the appropriate repair, which could range from a fluid change to a valve body replacement or, in worst-case scenarios, a full CVT replacement.
