Vehicle: 2020 Infiniti QX60 Luxe

I have a 2020 Infiniti QX60 Luxe, and recently the CVT transmission has started behaving oddly. When accelerating from a stop, it sometimes feels like it's jerking or hesitating before engaging smoothly. I've also noticed a slight slipping sensation at higher speeds, almost like the engine revs but the car isn't accelerating as it should.

There's no check engine light on yet, but it's definitely not the smooth operation I'm used to. The mileage is around 60k.

Is this a common issue with the QX60's CVT? What could be causing this?

  1. Check Transmission Fluid:

    • Level: Ensure the transmission fluid is at the correct level. Low fluid can cause slipping and jerking.
    • Condition: Inspect the fluid for color and smell. It should be reddish and not smell burnt. Burnt fluid indicates excessive heat and wear.
  2. Common Causes for CVT Issues:

    • Degraded Transmission Fluid: CVTs are highly sensitive to fluid quality. Overdue fluid changes can lead to premature wear and performance issues. Infiniti recommends specific intervals for CVT fluid replacement.
    • Valve Body Malfunction: The valve body controls fluid pressure and flow within the transmission. A faulty valve body can cause erratic shifting or engagement.
    • Torque Converter Issues: Problems with the torque converter can lead to slipping, shuddering, and inefficient power transfer.
    • Speed Sensors: Faulty input or output speed sensors can confuse the transmission control unit (TCU), leading to incorrect gear ratios and rough operation. Common OBD codes include P0740 (Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Malfunction) or P0717 (Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit No Signal).
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • Immediately if the jerking or slipping worsens, or if a check engine light illuminates.
    • If you notice any unusual whining or grinding noises from the transmission.
    • A specialized transmission shop or Infiniti dealership can perform a diagnostic scan, check fluid pressure, and inspect internal components. Early diagnosis can often prevent the need for a full transmission replacement.
